TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI women's soccer team came out flat and wound up on the short side of a 4-1 decision at Oral Roberts on Friday night. Maria Grados scored a pair of goals for the Golden Eagles and Natalya Manyan added a goal and an assist for the hosts. It was IUPUI's first road loss of the season as the Jaguars entered Friday's match a perfect 7-0 away from home.
"We just didn't come to play," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "Not to take anything away from them, they've got a really good team. We just couldn't get the ball out of our end. After they scored the initial goal, we really struggled to put together more than one pass at a time.
"Somehow, we've got to get back to the basics and find a way to get back to playing at a championship level."
Grados gave ORU (6-8, 3-3 Summit) a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute and Lorena Soto pushed it to 2-0 midway through the first half.
IUPUI (12-4, 4-2 Summit) finally got on the board in the 32nd minute when top scorer
Megan Hock took a pass from
Leslie Walker and got a shot past ORU goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler. However, ORU added insurance before halftime when Manyan tallied in the 42nd minute.
The Jaguars missed an opportunity to cut into the lead early in the second half, hitting a short-range free kick into an ORU defensive wall from just beyond the 18-yard box.
"Some of the goals we were scoring a year ago just aren't happening for us right now," Johnson said. "Megan (Hock) battled and played hard - she's just not a physical type player."
IUPUI was outshot 18-5 overall and 8-4 on frame.
The Jags will conclude the two-game road swing on Sunday when it takes on Centenary at 11:00 a.m..
