INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams made their home debut on Friday night at the IU Natatorium, with the men's swimmers and divers defeating Centre College, 173.5-103.5. The women's team split their meet, downing Butler, 97-40, while falling to Centre, 79-59.
The men's team had 27 podium results in the meet, despite feeling the effects of the flu throughout the week. With some of their top swimmers out because of illness and its after-effects, the younger Jaguars stepped up, as junior
Michael Steurer, sophomore
Andrew Heideman, freshman
Josh Davis and senior
Ben Smith set the tone for the meet by taking first in the 200 medley relay, combining to finish in 1:42.70.
Steven Bretscher and
Neal Ross kept the Jags rolling with first and third-place finishes in the 1000 fresstyle, respectively. Bretscher and Ross followed up their effort by going one-two in the 500 free later in the meet.
Having swam the backstroke and breaststroke in the medley relay, Steurer and Heideman each swept their respective events, each winning at 100 and 200 yards. Steurer added to his individual wins total with a 2:04.49 effort in the 200 IM.
The Jaguars capped the night with a win in the 400 free relay, as
Steven Zoss, Smith,
Luke Towne and
Justin Shaw finished the race in 3:22.76.
On the women's side, the young Jaguars performed well, led by
Elizabeth Bourgeois, who became the first Jaguar in two years to swim the 200 free in under 2:00.00. Bourgeois' time of 1:59.99 was the fastest by an IUPUI women's swimmer since
Sara Smith pulled off the feet in February of 2007.
Overall, the women took 18 podium finishes, led by Bourgeois, who was took first-place honors in both the 200 free and 100 fly. The freshman was third in the 50 free, clocking in at 25.22.
Joining Bourgeois at the top of the podium were Jaguars
Chen Ni and
Natalie Jarrett; Ni swept the diving events, posting a 236.60 on the 1-meter board and a 276.85 on the 3-meter, finishing immediately ahead of teammate
Brittany Gauger.
Jarrett began her meet by helping IUPUI capture the 200 medley relay and then finished second in the 100 back. Competing in the 200 breaststroke, Jarrett touched the wall in 2:31.47, claiming the top spot.
Carrie Ford was second in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:27.34; the junior swam the 1000 free in 11:18.55, placing third.
The Jaguars will be back in the pool on Sunday, Nov. 1, when they will take on Xavier, Evansville and Butler. The meet will be contested at the Fishers High School pool, beginning at 1 p.m..
