INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI volleyball team finished the night with more kills, assists and digs than Oral Roberts in their match, but 43 errors sent the Jaguars to a 3-0 defeat at The Jungle on Friday night. The 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 loss was IUPUI's first Summit League loss at home.
IUPUI (11-5, 3-3 Summit) had chances to take control of all three sets, but errors plagued the Jaguars throughout the night, helping Oral Roberts (7-7, 3-3 Summit) pick up their first conference road win of the 2009 season.
Though the Jaguars outhit the Golden Eagles 38 kills to 31, ORU hit .168 for the match, committing just 12 errors compared to IUPUI's 23. 10 service errors, seven reception errors and two ball handling errors helped give Oral Roberts over half of their points in the match.
Kalyse Reimbold led the way offensively for the Jags, recording 11 kills, while
Lindsey Weber chipped in 10. Defensively,
Shari Bernhardt turned in 19 digs, while
Rachel Holmes (11) and
Nicole Ramey (10) each posted double-digit dig efforts.
Despite the errors, the Jaguars found themselves with chances to control the match, beginning in the opening set. Even though IUPUI fell behind 10-6 in the early going, they fought back to knot the match at 17 after a Reimbold kill.
However, a service error handed Oral Roberts a sideout; after a Golden Eagle error tied the set again, another error gave ORU a 19-18 lead, which they stretched to 23-20 after two more IUPUI errors. A
Dana Gardner kill brought the Jaguars within two points and on serve, but consecutive errors helped the Golden Eagles take an early 1-0 lead.
The second set saw the Jags overcome another early four-point deficit on the strength of Bernhardt's serve to go up 9-8 after two straight aces from the Plainfield H.S.-product. Noticing a shift by ORU's libero, Bernhardt placed her serve perfectly in the middle of the ORU defense, prompting the Golden Eagles to burn an early timeout.
The 75-second break seemed to settle Oral Roberts, as they went on a 4-0 run, turning a 12-11 IUPUI lead into a three-point Golden Eagle advantage. Three errors helped ORU on the spurt, capped by a block at the net that caused IUPUI to take a timeout.
Just as it had for ORU earlier, the break helped the Jaguars, as they tied the set at 17 on an ace by Holmes. The teams traded sideouts on the next four services, but it was the Golden Eagles who assumed a 22-20 lead after back-to-back service aces by Tatum Fredeen.
After another IUPUI timeout, the Jaguars quickly tied the set again, using a service error and a Weber kill to knot the set at 22. After the teams traded sideouts, ORU gained a set point chance, and the Golden Eagles came through with one of their four blocks on the night to capture the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Needing to capture the third set to stay alive, the Jaguars captured the first point in the set on a Weber kill, but the Golden Eagles responded by taking nine of the following 12 points to go up 9-4 early in the set.
Battling uphill from that point on, IUPUI closed within three points at 16-13 after a 4-0 run on the service of
Monica Suding. Back-to-back Reimbold kills got the Jags rolling before two ORU errors brought the Jaguars within striking distance.
Still, ORU regrouped with a timeout and surged ahead, 20-14; the Jaguars had one last run in them, though, as kills from Gardner, Weber and
Hillary Houston helped IUPUI close withing 22-19. Houston's kill would be the final point of the night for IUPUI, though, as Oral Roberts picked up the last three points of the set to close the match.
The Jaguars will look to stay above .500 in Summit League play when they host Centenary at The Jungle on Saturday night. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and will be available via live stats and on IUPUI Live! Scott McCauley (play-by-play) and Rich Coleman (color) will call the action.
