JAGUAR SWIMMERS COME UP JUST SHORT AGAINST SAINT LOUIS

Women fall, 131-105; men lose, 137-97

Meet Results

INDIANAPOLIS -- Swimming their penultimate meet of the 2008-09 season, the IUPUI swimming and diving teams showed a marked improvement from their previous meet.  Though the Jaguars fell to Saint Louis, 137-97, on the men's side, and 131-105 on the women's, the teams tallied 34 podium finishes.

Including among their 34 podiums were nine event victories, including the opening event of the meet, the women's 200 medley relay.  Natalie Jarrett, Olivia Briolat, Sara Smith and Holly Reed combined to win the event in 1:56.67. 

Both Jarrett and Reed went on to win individual events, as well, with Jarrett winning the 100 backstroke in 1:04.28.  The freshman also took second in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 2:02.62.  Reed won the 50 free, sprinting to a time of 26.05.

On senior day, it was fitting that Victoria Wheeler put together one of the best meets of her career, winning the 100 freestyle in 57.22.  The senior picked up a third-place result in the 100 breaststroke, gliding to a time of 1:17.02.

Alexandra McCreight and Sara Smith also picked up wins, with McCreight taking the 400 IM in 4:50.24.  The junior also tallied a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 1:03.86.  Smith took first in the 100 fly in 1:01.56.

On the men's side, the Jaguars got off to a strong start by going 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle.  Steven Bretscher won the event in 10:10.36, while Michael Steurer was second in 10:14.88.  Steurer also took a runner-up spot in the 100 backstroke, reaching the wall in 53.94.

Jaron Tuttle, diving for the first time in 2009, picked up the men's other first-place result, winning the 3-meter diving competition in 375.06.

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will wrap up their regular season when they compete in a recently-added meet against Butler University and Valparaiso University on Sunday, Feb. 8.  The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. from the pool at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.
