DETROIT - The IUPUI women's soccer team played the University of Detroit evenly for over 80 minutes before allowing a goal in the 85th in a 1-0 road loss on Monday evening. The Jaguar attack outshot 10-8 and 6-2 on frame, but were unable to capitalize on any precious scoring opportunities. 

On the flip side, UDM (1-1-0) cashed in on an even rarer scoring chance with 5:25 to play to collect its first win of the 2008 campaign. 

On a counter attack, Selena Stanski's was able to get a shot past IUPUI (0-1-0) junior goalkeeper Jamie Farrell from just beyond the eight-yard box to account for the day's only offense. The play was set up by a short pass from Lauren Moss after the Jags had turned the ball over in the midfield. 

Farrell made one save and UDM's Joanna Hinde made five saves in the shutout. 

Hinde and her defensive teammates earned their keep, almost from the opening kickoff. IUPUI put together an offensive flurry in the 14th minute when freshman Alicia Brock had an initial attempt saved by Hinde and a rebound try cleared off the back line by a UDM defender. Moments later, junior Leslie Walker put a shot on net that Hinde was able to defend. 

Fellow junior Katrina McCrory had IUPUI's best scoring chance of the second half, but was unable to get much pace behind her shot after penetrating into the teeth of the defense.

"We had good possession in their end," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "I thought we had some good chances and did a pretty good job of creating opportunities. I think going into the weekend, if we continue to create these chances, we'll score some goals."

Brock led the IUPUI offense with three shot attempts and Walker and rookie Alex Baer had two each.

Despite allowing just one goal, the defense was a tad shakier than Johnson would've liked, partly due to early season injuries.

"In the beginning, we were a little out of kilter," Johnson said. "We were just really disorganized in the back. We made some substitutions and made some changes and were able to hold things together though."

IUPUI's season-opening five-game road swing continues on Friday when the Jags head to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Lipscomb. The Jaguars will then play Murray State on Sunday as they head back north.
