UIC TALLIES EARLY EN ROUTE TO 2-0 PRESEASON WIN OVER JAGS

8/18/2006 10:03:00 AM

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - UIC needed just 36 seconds to score the opening goal against the IUPUI men's soccer team on Friday night at the 7th annual IPFW Soccer Showcase. Tonci Skroce scored two goals for the Flames as UIC coasted to a 2-0 exhibition victory.

Senior goalkeeper Peter Brasovan played nearly 35 minutes of scoreless soccer in the second half in net.

"It was a very poor performance in the first half, " IUPUI head coach Steve Franklin said. "The effort just wasn't there in the first half and we came out very, very flat.

"It was a disappointing night."

Skroce took a feed from Pawel Otachel off the opening kickoff and immediately staked his squad to a 1-0 lead. Skroce beat senior goalkeeper Drew Deffner again in the 15th minute off an assist from Cesar Zambrano.

UIC outshot IUPUI 10-5 for the match as the Jags managed just three attempts on goal. Sophomore Daniel Jeftich was credited with two of the Jags' shot attempts, including one on goal.

"UIC is a very sharp team and they played well tonight," Franklin said. "I fully expect that they'll crack the top 20 later in the season.

"We had a productive second half, but it obviously wasn't enough."

Last season, UIC enjoyed a 4-0 win over the Jaguars at The Showcase. The Flames lost a 1-0 double overtime thriller to perennial powerhouse Indiana earlier in the week, despite outshooting the Hoosiers 13-8.

Friday's match marked IUPUI's final preseason test before beginning the regular season next weekend. The Jaguars are slated to face UWGB and Florida Atlantic at the Nike/University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament.

Friday's match with UW-Green Bay is scheduled to kickoff at 5:00 p.m. in Lexington.
