SHREVEPORT, La. - The IUPUI women's soccer team claimed a share of The Summit League regular season crown with a 2-0 win at Centenary on Sunday afternoon. The victory extended the Jaguars' current winning streak to a school record six straight games and was IUPUI's seventh straight Summit League win.
IUPUI improved to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in The Summit as Centenary dipped to 3-14-1 and 1-7 in league play. Head Coach
Chris Johnson's team was pegged to finish seventh according to the preseason coaches poll.
"We were picked to finish seventh and that served as motivation all year long," Johnson said. "Even when a kid went down, we were able to plug the holes. We've become a very complete team throughout the conference season."
On Sunday, freshmen
Alicia Brock and
Alex Baer scored goals and junior goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell increased her single-season shutout record to eight.
Brock netted her team-high ninth goal of the year in the 17th minute, thanks to an assist from fellow freshman
Megan Hock. Hock sent the ball out wide right to Brock, who worked past a defender before placing a shot past Centenary goalkeeper Deb Hill.
After the score, the Jaguars played more conservatively, dropping into a 4-4-2 formation.
Centenary's best scoring opportunity came late in the first half when Farrell made an initial save on a Chelsea Granger attempt, but was unable to corral the ball. Centenary's Candace Rushing was able to get a touch on the ball in amongst a scrum but an IUPUI defender retreated to the end line to clear the ball.
The Jags added insurance in the closing minutes when Baer scored her second career goal off an assist from
Katrina McCrory. Baer played a short corner kick to McCrory, who fed the ball back to the rookie outside midfielder who driled a shot from 20 yards out into the upper corner of the net.
IUPUI outshot the host Ladies 15-8 overall and 6-5 on frame. Farrell made four saves and sophomore
Natalie Holland tried a team-high three shots. The Jaguars return to action next Friday when they make their first conference tournament appearance since 2001.
"I'd like to think we're one of the hotter teams in the league right now," Johnson said. "Oakland has played exceptionally well since we were up there, but I like our chances against anyone.
This year's tournament will be held in Macomb, Ill..
