ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open The Summit League Tournament on Friday morning against top seeded host Oakland University. The Jaguars are hoping to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Golden Grizzlies in the opening round of the four-team event.
IUPUI's (8-8-2) offense has received goals from 11 different scorers this season, led by freshmen
Matt Guy and
Perez Agaba's three goals. Senior
Cameron Williams has a team-high three assists from his forward position and took over a starting job midway through the season.
Defensively, IUPUI's back line is headlined by athletic defenders
Ben Heidari and
Dan Heidari and rugged senior
Ryan Brumbaugh. Ben Heidari enters the postseason as one of just two Jags to start all 18 games, joined by junior
Eric Weigman.
Fifth-year senior
Francisco Maia will get the nod in goal, earning just his fourth career start. Freshman
Tyler Keever was lost for the season after suffering an injury in the Wright State game, making Maia the starter.
The 6-foot-5 native of Brazil has a 1.02 goals against average and .812 save percentage. He was named The Summit League Defensive Player of the Week when he guided the Jags to a pivotal 2-1 win at Oral Roberts.
The winner of the first game will take on the winner of the UMKC/Western Illinois match for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA College Cup.
