KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The IUPUI men's soccer team's string of consecutive shutouts came to a screeching halt at Bourke Field in Kansas City on Saturday as the Jaguars came up on the short end of a 3-0 Summit League decision against UMKC. The Jags had blanked their three previous opponents coming in before yielding three scores in their first Summit League road match of the season.
UMKC's Caleb Mitchell scored the game-winner and Brian Harris scored twice in the second half to account for the day's scoring.
"All three goals came on defensive lapses," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "We came in very, very flat. Unfortunately, we showed our youth and immaturity today."
Mitchell broke IUPUI (5-4-2, 1-1-0 Summit) freshman goalkeeper
Tyler Keever's personal scoreless streak in the 25th minute when John Bayron Sosa played a through ball between the defensive backs, setting up a successful one-on-one opportunity. It was Mitchell's second score of the season and snapped Keever's string at 358:56.
Harris scored in the 50th and 81st minutes for his sixth and seventh goals of the season. His first goal came on an unsuccessful offsides trap, putting him one-on-one with Keever. UMKC (5-3-2, 2-0-0 Summit) outshot the Jaguars 15-7 and 7-2 on goal. Harris led all players with four shots while no IUPUI player got more than one attempt.
"UMKC definitely showed why they've knocked off the No. 3 and No. 19 teams in the country," Franklin said. "We were never really able to adjust to their possession and ability to move the ball around."
The Kangaroos were fresh off a 4-3 defeat of No. 19 Drake and defeated No. 3 Creighton earlier this season.
IUPUI returns home to take on NAIA Marian College on Thursday, Oct. 9 at Kuntz Stadium at 7:00 p.m.. The Jaguars will offer their final pregame clinic of the season through Indiana Youth Soccer, beginning at 4:45 p.m.. Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag as well.
