INDIANAPOLIS – Needing a win to stay in the hunt for a Summit League Tournament berth, the IUPUI volleyball team came out sluggish, dropping their first set to Western Illinois.  Still, the Jaguars persevered, using a career-high 27 kills from #Kalyse Reimbold to go along with 15 from Shari Bernhardt and 11 from Dana Gardner# in a 3-1 win over the Westerwinds Friday night at The Jungle.

IUPUI (12-11, 5-4 Summit) hit just .143 in the opening set, but wound up hitting .257 for the night, continually improving their hitting percentage in each set.  Reimbold began the night with 5 kills and a .077 hitting percentage; she ended the night with the most kills in a four-set match among Summit League players and a .357 hitting percentage.

Just as the offense got off to a slow start, so too did IUPUI’s defense, as they had just 12 kills in the first set.  However, four Jaguars finished with 11 or more digs, led by the 17 of #Chelsea Bastin#.  #Danielle Goodnight# picked up her 13th double-double of the season with a season-high 61 assists and 14 digs.  #Rachel Holmes# chipped in with 13 digs, while Reimbold had 11 in tallying her third career double-double.

The Jaguars got off to an inconsistent start in the opening set, matching miniature runs with periods of poor blocking and attacking.  Consecutive Western Illinois (7-16, 3-6 Summit) blocks broke an 11-11 tie, and following a block and an ace, the Westerwinds led, 16-13, causing IUPUI to burn their first timeout.

While IUPUI took the first point after the timeout, it was Western Illinois who continued to apply pressure, capitalizing on a Jaguar block error, a kill and an attack error to go up, 21-16.  Still, the Jags had one more run left in the set, reeling off four straight points on the strength of two #Ashley Johnson# kills and a Bernhardt ace.

Unfortunately for the Jags, they were not able to close any further on Western Illinois, as the Westerwinds took the opening set, 25-21.

In the beginning of the second set, the two teams traded points before a Reimbold kill gave the Jaguars a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish.  A #Monica Suding# kill extended the lead, and after a Reimbold kill followed a WIU error, the Jags led, 10-6.

Western Illinois got no closer than three points the rest of the set, but neither team took a timeout, leading to 44 continuous points in the set.  Reimbold hit .779 in the set with 7 kills in 9 attempts, with no errors.  Gardner had 4, while the Jags were 14-for-20 on sideout opportunities.

After a 10-minute break, in which the Jaguar players thanked the professors who have mentored them through the year, the two teams resumed competition, with the Jaguars taking an early 10-8 lead.  IUPUI pushed their lead to four at 19-15 to cause a Western Illinois timeout.

Whatever was said in the Westerwind huddle appeared to work, as two quick WIU points caused Steve Payne to burn a timeout on the IUPUI side.  However, Western Illinois took a momentary 20-19 lead before a service error tied the set.  The teams traded the next two points before a Bernhardt kill put the Jags ahead, 22-21.

After another Western Illinois timeout, the Westerwinds took two straight points to go up 23-22 and capture momentum after an IUPUI error gave them a set point.  However, the Jaguars went to Johnson on their next possession, closing with 23-24; Holmes fed Bernhardt for a kill to tie the set, and a Reimbold kill off a Goodnight set gave the Jags set point.

Western Illinois killed the set point with one of their own, but Reimbold created set point #2 with her 10th kill of the set, and Suding closed it out by killing an errant Western Illinois dig, giving the Jaguars a 27-25 win and 2-1 set lead.

Needing one more win to close out Western Illinois, the Jaguars seemed headed for a fifth set when they came out sluggish and got behind early, 3-7.  Still, IUPUI didn’t panic and continued to encourage each other in the huddle.

A quick 6-2 run tied the set at 9, and the teams traded points throughout the middle of the set, with neither team leading by more than two.  Trailing 17-18, a Westerwind attack error and Reimbold kill put the Jaguars up 19-18, and caused a Western Illinois timeout.

The Jags continued their run after the break, as Gardner tallied her 11th kill of the night off a Goodnight feed.  Another Reimbold kill kept IUPUI’s lead at two, 21-19, and they extended their lead after a block by Suding.

Bernhardt came away with her 13th kill of the night to make it 23-20, and her final two kills of the evening closed the book on the set and match, 25-21.

The IUPUI volleyball team will travel to Shreveport, Louisiana, tomorrow, for a Sunday match versus the Ladies of Centenary.  The match will begin a 5 p.m. CT from the Gold Dome.
