INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team continued its Summit League success on Friday night with a 1-0 victory over Southern Utah at Kuntz Stadium. Junior midfielder
Katrina McCrory netted her fourth goal of the season in the 59th minute and junior goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell racked up her fifth shutout of the year as the Jaguars improved to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in Summit League play.
Southern Utah dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in league play.
McCrory accounted for all of the game's scoring by drawing the foul that set up a dangerous restart and then cashing in on the opportunity. The tri-captain weaved through the Southern Utah defense before being pulled down just beyond the 18-yard box, setting up an indirect kick. Sophomore
Natalie Holland tapped the restart just left of the defensive wall where McCrory blasted a shot into the upper righthand corner of the net. It was her second game-winner of the season and the ninth score of her career.
"That's been another big difference between last year and this year - the amount of goals we've scored on set pieces," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "I think we've scored six or seven this year on set pieces and that's been the difference in probably four or five games for us."
It was Holland's third assist of the season.
Defensively, IUPUI hung tough down the stretch as Southern Utah's attack increased its intensity. While Farrell was credited with her tenth career shutout, sophomore
Kelly Williams came up with the key save of the night with under seven minutes to play.
After the ball got loose inside the 18 on a corner kick, Elyse Alexander drilled a shot headed for inside the right post with Farrell out of position. However Williams was stationed on the endline and was able to clear the ball out of harm's way.
"That was the game right there," Johnson said. "Jamie and Kelly Williams came up with two huge saves, clearing the ball off the goal line."
Moments prior, Farrell made an impressive snare of a drive from Allison Goettsche for her sixth and final save of the evening. Southern Utah's Sutton Fox made three stops and also benefited from a team save.
Freshman forward
Megan Hock got loose behind two SUU defenders to set up a one-on-one breakaway with Fox. The two got tangled just inside the 18-yard box with the ball dead set for the open net, however an SUU defender recovered in time to play the ball wide of the net.
Southern Utah outshot IUPUI 13-9 overall and 7-5 on frame, however most of the T-Birds attempts came from long distance. The Jags still recorded the shutout, despite not playing its cleanest soccer of the year.
"That speaks volumes of how far we've come from last year to this year," Johnson said. "I'm proud of th way the girls battled out there. I think Southern Utah really tries to make it a physical affair. It's not always a pretty game when we play them.
"I thought our girls held in there and held strong. It got really chippy there for awhile. Our kids kept their cool, kept plugging away and did what they needed to do."
Southern Utah was whistled for 22 fouls while the Jags matched their season-high with 18 whistles.
IUPUI continues its four-game homestand with another Summit League test on Sunday. The Jaguars will host the Western Illinois Westerwinds with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. from Kuntz Stadium. Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag.
