BROOKINGS, S.D. – The IUPUI suffered a lost weekend in the Dakotas, falling to South Dakota State in five sets Saturday night at Frost Arena.  Kalyse Reimbold led the Jags with 22 kills, while Chelsea Bastin had 19 digs in the 17-25, 25-18, 27-25, 14-25, 9-15 loss.

IUPUI (9-10, 2-4 Summit) fell below .500 for the first time in 2008 in the loss.  The Jaguars battled hard, but could not overcome a Jackrabbit team that hit .218 and recorded 90 digs in the match.  Lauran Thompson had 14 kills to supplement the Jags’ attack, while Danielle Goodnight had 47 assists.

In the opening set, South Dakota State (4-12, 3-3 Summit) brook open a close set with a 6-1 run, creating a 21-15 lead and forcing an IUPUI timeout.  The Jackrabbits took four of the next six points to claim the opening set, putting the Jaguars in an early 1-0 hole following a 25-17 win.

The Jaguars responded in the second set, evening the match with a 25-18 victory.  With IUPUI leading 9-7, a SDSU attack error and Reimbold kill opened a four-point Jag lead.  IUPUI opened a five-point advantage at 19-14 after a kill by Rachel Holmes, forcing a South Dakota State timeout.

A Jackrabbit attack error gave the Jags a 20-14 lead, and a Reimbold kill made it 21-14.  The teams traded points over the last seven decisions, with the Jags evening the sets after a kill by Jessica Phelps.

In the third set, South Dakota State came out the aggressor, opening a 12-8 lead, forcing an IUPUI timeout.  The Jaguars responded to Steve Payne’s words in the huddle, using a 9-5 run to close within a point at 18-17 after two consecutive Phelps kills.

However, the Jackrabbits responded after the timeout, going on a 5-3 run to take a 23-20 lead and control of the set.  Still the Jaguars kept battling, getting two straight kills from Reimbold and Goodnight to close within 24-23.  A Reimbold kill after a SDSU timeout tied the set at 24, and following a Jackrabbit attack error, the Jags had a set point.

Still, SDSU tied the set at 25 before another Reimbold kill gave the Jaguars set point #2.  This time, Thompson closed the set with a kill, giving the Jags a 27-25 win and 2-1 set lead.

Following a break, the Jackrabbits came out aggressively once again, taking a 6-2 lead and forcing an IUPUI timeout.  The Jaguars came no closer than five points the rest of the set, as SDSU opened an 18-10 lead, causing the Jags to burn their final timeout of the set.  The Jackrabbits cruised to a 25-14 win, evening the sets at 2 apiece, giving SDSU momentum heading into the final set.

Again, South Dakota State came out aggressively, racing to a 6-2 lead and causing Payne to burn a timeout.  This time, the Jaguars responded, using a kill by Shari Bernhardt, along with a Reimbold kill to come within 8-6, forcing a Jackrabbit timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, South Dakota State opened a three-point lead, only to take a timeout when a Goodnight kill made it an 11-9 match.  Two straight SDSU points forced Payne into his final timeout of the night, and two more Jackrabbbit kills gave SDSU the set and match, 15-9.

The Jaguars will attempt to snap their four-match skid when they host Oakland University next Friday, October 17.  The match will begin at 7 p.m. at The Jungle.
