TULSA CONTINUES TO BE UNKIND TO JAGUARS IN 3-0 LOSS TO ORAL ROBERTS

9/29/2007 2:26:39 PM

TULSA, Okla. -- Despite entering the game with a .500 overall record, the Cooper Aerobics Arena continued to be a house of horrors from the IUPUI volleyball team, as the Jaguars fell to Oral Roberts, 3-0, Saturday night.

IUPUI (9-10, 2-4 Summit) received 11 kills from sophomore Hillary Houston and seven apiece from senior Carol Newell and sophomore Ashley Johnson.  Even with the combined 25 kills, the Jaguars hit just .168 for the match.

Houston posted her third double-double of the season, with 11 kills and 10 digs. Both of her other kill-dig double-doubles have come in Summit League play.

With the loss, the Jaguars fell to 0-14 in Tulsa, losing, 22-30, 25-30, 22-30.

Oral Roberts (9-7, 4-0 Summit) had four players with double-figure kills and posted eight team blocks in the match, effectively shutting down IUPUI's attack. 50 Golden Eagle digs also helped stunt the Jaguar offense.

The Jags came out slow in game one, hitting just .079, with nine errors in 38 attacks. Still, IUPUI hung with Oral Roberts in the early portion of the game, leading the game 9-7 before the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 run to take control of the opener.

Trailing by seven, IUPUI was not able to close closer than six in falling behind by a game.

The Jaguars again played ORU tough in the second game, hanging with the Golden Eagles throughout the game, which featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. A kill by Newell and an ORU attack error tied the game at 21, but a Golden Eagle kill and service ace gave them a two-point lead that held up.

With Oral Roberts up two-games-to-none, the Jaguars attempted to rally, opening up an early 8-4 lead before the Golden Eagles tied the game at 9-9. The lead bounced back and forth through the middle of the game, accounting for the nine ties and four lead changes.

A kill by freshman Lauran Thompson tied the game at 18 apiece, but ORU took the next four points to assume control of the game.

IUPUI was able to stay within striking distance, being on serve at 25-22, but the Golden Eagles took the next five points to claim the game and match.

The Jaguars will be back in action next Friday, October 5, when they will head to Rochester, Michigan, to face off against Oakland University. The match will begin at 7 p.m. EST from the O'Rena.
