INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI Jaguars are now off to their best start in over seven years, sweeping the University of Tennessee-Martin in their first game of the IUPUI Jaguars Hampton Inn Invitational at the IUPUI Gymnasium.
IUPUI (4-2) hit .291 for the match, recording over half of their points via kills. Senior Devika Bellamy posted her second double-double of the season, tallying 11 kills and 11 digs for the Jaguars. Fellow senior Carol Newell chipped in a match-best 13 kills.
From the beginning of the match, the Jaguars and Skyhawks traded long rallies and momentum in the match, in which IUPUI won, 30-18, 30-25, 30-18.
In game one, IUPUI came out swinging, hitting .375 while turning in 13 kills. Newell led the way with five in the game, while sophomore Danielle Goodnight was a perfect 3-for-3 with seven of her match-high 37 helpers.
The Jags overall effort extended into their defensive play, where they had 14 digs, compared to UTM's seven in game one.
Game two saw seven tie scores and three lead changes, but the Jaguars persevered, hitting at a .208 clip with 17 kills. Bellamy and Goodnight combined for 13 digs in the game to thwart the Tennessee-Martin attack. Though the Skyhawks had 14 kills, they came in 50 attempts, as the Jaguars wore them down.
IUPUI finished off UTM (2-2) in game three, swinging at a .364 mark while blocking five attack attempts of the Skyhawks. Bellamy and sophomore Ashley Johnson teamed up for three dual blocks, shutting down any comeback attempt by UTM. Goodnight finished off her solid night with 15 more assists, the last coming on a Bellamy kill to end the match.
The Jaguars will continue play in IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, September 2 at 1:30 p.m., when they take on North Carolina A&T. The Jags will follow that match with the final match of the tournament at 6:30 p.m. versus Central Michigan.
