TOLEDO, Ohio -- Cleveland State used a fierce offensive attack with four players posting double-digit kills, hitting .318 to sweep IUPUI, 3-0, in the fourth game of the Clarion Hotel Westgate Rocket Classic at John F. Savage Hall.
IUPUI (1-1) received 13 kills from freshman Lauran Thompson a game after she had six in her first collegiate action. Thompson hit at a .226 clip, but the Jaguars could not overcome the Vikings attack, falling 26-30, 13-30, 26-30.
The Jaguars came out of the gates well for the second consecutive game, leading the Vikings early in the game, maintaining the lead until the Vikings knotted the contest at 18 apiece during a 10-0 run that saw IUPUI fall behind, 24-18.
Still, the Jags battled back to force a Cleveland State timeout by cutting their deficit to 27-24 before recording another point to trail by two. However, the Vikings scored three of the next four points to take the first game.
Cleveland State dominated the second game, jumping out to a 9-2 before an IUPUI timeout. IUPUI played even with CSU through the middle of the game, trailing 21-11, but ran out of time to mount a comeback, as the Vikings hit .333 overall to put the game away and go up 2-0.
The third game resembled the first game, with the Jaguars going toe-to-toe with the Vikings, holding a 23-21 lead, but Cleveland State came out of a timeout to go on a 9-3 run to complete the sweep. The Vikings recorded kills on eight of their nine points to claim the win.
After tallying nine blocks (one solo, 16 assists, one error) in their win over Toledo, IUPUI struggled at the net versus CSU, recording 39 kills and just one block (two block assists) while Cleveland State had 55 kills and 10 blocks (two solo, 16 block assists).
Senior Devika Bellamy again tallied a double-digit kill effort for the Jaguars, finishing with 10 kills in 23 attempts.
Junior Chelsea Bastin again led the backcourt with 14 digs, while sophomore Danielle Goodnight posted 23 assists. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Holmes tallied 10 helpers.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. when they will square off against the Braves of Bradley University. In their afternoon match, IUPUI will take on Xavier University at 5 p.m..
