DETROIT - The IUPUI women's soccer team snapped its modest two-game losing streak with a 1-0 shutout at Detroit on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Farrell continued her torrid play, posting a career-high 11 saves in the win.
Offensively, despite being on the short-end of a 20-7 shot disparity, sophomore Emily Hicks made the most of an opportunity early in the second half for the eventual game-winner. Junior Angie Pilat carried the ball on goal and beat UD goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry, before squaring a pass to Hicks, who was sprinting towards the net. Hicks then hammered a shot into the open net for her second game-winner of the season.
"It was good to finish an opportunity after what happened in Sunday's game," Hicks said of the 2-0 loss to Indiana State. "It was a nice play by Angie (Pilat). She beat her defender and the goalkeeper, but I had more of a straight on angle."
Both teams narrowly missed scores in the first half. Detroit's (2-7-0) Andrea DiPace rifled a shot off the post less than six minutes into the match on a free kick. Late in the half, Pilat had a shot glance off the crossbar, denying her possible fourth goal of the season. Pilat and midfielder Stacy Downing had two shot attempts each to lead the Jags.
On a day when the Jags (5-4-1) scored for the first time in nearly 200 minutes, it was the defense that stole the show. The back four had to shuffle for the final 60 minutes after Lisa Gebhard left the field late in the first half.
"Jen Scorniaenchi stepped back there and did a really good job," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "She and April (Osborn) did a really good job of containing Mary Parker. Those two played well together."
Parker attempted a game-high eight shots, putting five on goal.
"A lot in the beginning (of the match) was pretty elementary stuff," Johnson said. "But Jamie (Farrell) knocked off a couple of breakaways and made a really nice kick save. She also had a circus show on one where she mishandled it and had to run back and track it down.
"She did a good job keeping her composure."
Farrell ran her streak to 397:53 in goal without allowing a score, breaking the previous mark of 379:02. In the process, she recorded her third shutout of the season and dropped her goals against average to an incredible 0.19.
"Our back line has helped her out a lot too," Johnson said. "As a team, our goals against average is under one - compare that to what it's been in the past."
The team goals against average is currently 0.88, while the school record is 1.22, set in 2004.
IUPUI returns to Mid-Continent Conference play this weekend when they take on Oral Roberts on Saturday, Sept. 30. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. CST.
