INDIANAPOLIS - On a night when both IUPUI and Butler missed several opportunities, junior Angie Pilat helped the Jaguars salvage a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 85th minute. Head coach Chris Johnson used 18 different players and multiple patchwork formations to get the first-ever tie against its crosstown rival.
IUPUI was 0-6-0 all-time against Butler entering the match.
"A lot of our kids have played club together or grown up together here in the Indianapolis-area, so there's a lot of familiarity there," Johnson said of the rivalry with Butler. "It's definitely a very competitive game that nobody wants to lose."
After IUPUI (5-4-3) dictated the pace in the first half, but was unable to put any scores away, Butler (4-5-2) appeared to be in the driver's seat for much of the second half.
Marianne Schilling, fresh off a hat trick, took a square ball from Jenny Southard in the game's 48th minute to give the visiting Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Southard sent a pass to Schilling at the top of the box, who settled before rifling a shot to the left post past a diving Jessie Mann.
Butler continued the onslaught of shots, getting good looks from Schilling, Molly Arenberg and Angie Muir in the second half.
IUPUI recaptured control late in the half, thanks to Pilat's feisty presence and some help off the bench. Freshman Natalie Kasich won a head ball, flicking it to fellow frosh Cindel Sauer inside the top of the box. Sauer then split the two center backs with a pass to Pilat, who rolled a shot past Kirby Zwickel for her team-best fourth goal of the year.
"I kind of saw her out of the corner of my eye and poked it in to her," Sauer said of her first career assist. "It's amazing, to know that you can play balls into (Pilat) and she'll finish it, or knowing that if she's on the outside that she's going to get around the girl and cross it in there and give you a chance."
Sauer nearly set up the game-winner in the closing minute when she fed Hilary Thomas, who had an attempt that went awry. Sophomore Emily Hicks also made things interesting when her drive with just 48 seconds left sliced just high of the crossbar.
Butler had some great opportunities in the overtime periods, including a Southard shot that glanced off the right post just over three minutes into the second session. Southard later put a shot on net that Mann made her fifth and final save on.
IUPUI's best scoring chance of the first half came when freshman Lisa Kruse and Sauer played a give-and-go, leaving Kruse one-on-one with Zwickel. Unfortunately, Kruse was unable to get a clean touch on the ball, allowing a cast of Butler defenders time to recover and stop the try.
"I was really proud of our girls that it was the first time this year we had given up a goal first and come back," Johnson said. "It was nice to see us turn that corner and turn that corner tonight.
"I thought some of the kids who came off the bench did a real nice job. Cindel Sauer came off and was dangerous the entire game. She definitely impressed us a bit and is going to see more time down the road."
In a see-saw affair, Butler closed with an 18-17 shot edge, including 9-4 on net. Mann and freshman Jamie Farrell combined to make eight stops as Mann got credit for the tie.
Schilling led Butler with six shots, while Hicks attempted five for the Jags. IUPUI's offense sorely missed the center midfield presence of Sheri Levack, while 10 different players saw time across the back line.
"I think both teams really wanted to rest some kids, so we really didn't need to play 110 minutes tonight," Johnson said. "But if that's what it takes to not give up a loss, then that's what we needed to do."
IUPUI continues the brief two-game homestand when they host Southern Utah on Friday at Kuntz Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m..
