INDIANAPOLIS. - The IUPUI women's soccer team outshot Centenary 24-6 on Sunday afternoon, but the guests made an early goal stand for a 1-0 Mid-Continent Conference win.
Jenny Mather scored her first goal of the season just under 10 minutes in for the eventual game-winner. Centenary's Bre Fletcher intercepted a pass intended for IUPUI goalkeeper Jessie Mann (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), and then rolled an assist to a streaking Mather.
Mather nudged a shot to the left post past Mann, who had challenged off her back line.
Outside of that, IUPUI dominated possession for most of the match and had numerous opportunities to knot the score.
"We generated a lot of excitement down in their box all day, we just couldn't get a goal out of it," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "We really did a good job of executing everything we've worked on in practice the last couple of days.
"Sometimes you've got to have a little luck smiling on you and today we definitely didn't have that."
IUPUI outshot Centenary 11-5 in the first half, but was even more dangerous offensively in the second half thanks to a stiff wind blowing at their back.
Like most of the afternoon, the Jaguars had a great scoring chance go awry in the 64th minute. Centenary goalkeeper Ali Hilsher and IUPUI's Jenni Cusick (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Providence) got tangled up at the right edge of the box going for a loose ball. Hilsher was unable to corral the ball and was slow to get back to her feet, leaving the mouth of the net wide open.
The hosts were able to center the ball, but Angie Pilat (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) had her shot from 15 yards out sail high.
IUPUI later tested Hilsher on back-to-back shots in the 82nd and 83rd minutes.
Junior Mia Moody (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) bent a shot away from Hilsher to the far post, forcing the Centenary keeper to make a nice save. Moments later, freshman Mary Galouzis (Portage, Ind./Portage) flared a header on goal, that Hilsher nearly took over the endline with her.
She gloved the ball before grazing the crossbar with it on her way to the turf. IUPUI had one last threat with 17 seconds left when J.J. King (Mason, Ohio/Mason) found herself open on the right side after a short crossing pass.
King couldn't establish an angle to get a good look, but forced Hilsher to deflect the ball out of bounds.
Eight different IUPUI players had at least two shots led by Pilat's four. Fletcher accounted for two of the Ladies' six shots.
IUPUI also enjoyed a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Hilsher made 10 saves for Centenary while Mann made three for the Jaguars.
The loss dropped the Jags to 2-7-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play. Centenary moved to 5-8-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Mid-Con.
"If we can play that well in our upcoming games, we're not going to get shutout," Johnson said. "We had the opportunities - we had the right people in the right situations.
"I think we played well - I'm not disappointed with the way we played today."
The Jags return to action next Friday when they host Valparaiso at Kuntz Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m..
