ROCHESTER, Mich. - IUPUI allowed two early goals and was shutout for the fourth consecutive match as they fell at Oakland on Sunday, 3-0. Junior goalkeeper Jessie Mann (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) made a career-high 10 saves in net and was the beneficiary of four team saves.
A stiff wind and relentless offense helped Oakland set the offensive tone of the match early, getting four shots in the opening 1:40 of the match. The Golden Grizzlies got the eventual game-winner in the seventh minute when Marianne Samdal beat Mann in a one-on-one situation. Kristi Swaving set up the play, helping Samdal score her fifth goal of the season.
"In the first half, they were all over us," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "They came out enthusiastic and we came out flat.
"They're the most dangerous team we've faced yet."
Silje Peltopera made it 2-0 in the 17th minute when she one-timed a rebound off a defender for her first score of the season.
Swaving kept the heat on, putting five shots on goal in an eight-minute stretch before finally breaking through 31 minutes into the match. Swaving was able to draw Mann off her back line before rolling a shot into the empty net for her ninth score of the season.
"We gave up four breakaways early and they scored on two," Johnson said. "I thought Jessie (Mann) and Lisa (Gebhard) both played good games. It's just hard to overcome a deficit like that."
IUPUI's most dangerous build of the match came late in the first half. Junior Mia Moody (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) forced an Oakland team save on her attempt in the 35th minute. Seconds later, Sheri Levack (Portage, Ind./Portage) challenged OU keeper Jessica Howard with a shot on goal, which she deflected over the end line.
For the match, Oakland outshot IUPUI 24-4 overall and 16-2 in the first half. Both teams had three corner kicks opportunities.
Swaving led Oakland with nine shots, seven of which were on goal. No IUPUI player had more than one attempt.
In the second half, Johnson got positive contributions off the bench from Moody and freshman Lindsey Warfield (Portage, Ind./Portage). IUPUI was also able to keep Oakland out of the net, giving his squad something to build on coming down the stretch of the season.
"We really came out and played in the second half," Johnson said. "I thought Lindsey came in and did a nice job in possession and challenging for ball."
The loss dropped IUPUI to 2-9-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference. Oakland improved to 6-6-1 on the year and 2-1-0 in league play.
IUPUI returns to action on Tuesday when they play crosstown rival Butler. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on the Butler campus. It is the Jags' third match in a five-day span.
