Dr. Johannah Doecke

Dr. Johannah Casey-Doecke is in her ninth successful season as the diving coach for both the IUPUI men's and women's teams.

During her eight seasons as diving coach, she has guided eight different divers to qualify for NCAA Zone Diving competition. She has also coached the Jag divers to seven Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference) titles and produced six Summit League Divers of the Year and one NCAA All-American Athlete.

In 2008-09, Dr. Doecke mentored Chinese diver Chen Ni, helping her become IUPUI's first First Team All-American after she placed fourth on the platform at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Ni's preliminary score set the pool record at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M University.

During the following season Dr. Doecke coached Ni to the top of the NCAA Division I Championships at Purdue University, becoming the first female in Summit League history to earn an NCAA title. Chen also became IUPUI’s first NCAA Division I champion and continued on to win the World University Games, 10 meter Ladies Synchronized Diving event as a member of the Chinese National University Team.

Dr. Doecke is presently in charge of Aquatic Testing for Physical Education-Teacher Education at the IU School of Physical Education at IUPUI. While at IUPUI, she has earned seven Outstanding Faculty Teaching Awards, been honored with the 2000 PELLA Grant for Outstanding Teaching and was inducted into Phi Epsilon Kappa, the national honorary fraternity for physical educators and coaches. In 2006, she was appointed as PETM Department Technology Specialist and received a technology award from the IU Office of Professional Development-Bloomington for her work in Distance Learning-Course Design.

In 2009, the IUPUI Faculty Council honored her twenty-five years of service to the IUPUI community. 

She previously served as Head Diving Coach at the University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire and Center Grove High School. She is currently a full time lecturer for the School of Physical Education and is organizing a text on Springboard Diving with U.S. Olympic Coach John Wingfield (Human Kinetics Press).

Dr. Doecke graduated from Ohio State University in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Coaching. While at OSU, she worked under legendary Olympic coach Dr. Ron O'Brien. She later went on to earn her Master's Degree from OSU in Coaching Sciences and Sports Psychology in 1977. In 1984, she completed her Doctorate Degree in Athletic Administration from Ohio State.

A Registered Coach with U.S. Diving, Dr. Doecke currently serves as a Water Safety Instructor Trainer for the Greater Indianapolis Area Red Cross. She is a member of the Indiana Aquatic Board and  recently served as IAHPERD Aquatic Director for the IAHPERD State Board of Directors.

Dr. Doecke and her husband Christopher have been married for 28 years and reside in Lawrence, Ind.. Her husband is a NMR Specialist and Research Chemist at Eli Lilly Co. Their daughter Kristen graduated from IU’s Herron School of Art and Design in 2006 and received a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in May 2009.  Their youngest daughter, Jessie, is a 2010 graduate of IU-Kelly School of Business at IUPUI and is employed as a buyer at Angie’s List in Indianapolis.
