Former All-American Aaron Evans joined the IUPUI basketball staff in August 2019 as Director of Operations and was promoted to assistant coach prior to the 2020-2021 season. He returned to the role of Director of Operations in July 2021 and will continue to play a vital role in the program.Â
During the 2020-21 season, Evans helped the Jaguars to an 8-10 record during the COVID impacted season. In part due to Evans' tutelage, the Jags were driven by guard play as Marcus Burk ranked among the nation's top scorers at 21.7 points per game and sophomore Mike DePersia ranked third in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio. In addition, senior guard Jaylen Minnett continued to rank among the nation's elite three-point shooters and closed his career as the program's all-time leader in threes made. In addition to his on-court duties, Evans was also heavily involved in the program's recruiting, advance scouting and administrative duties.Â
He spent the past three seasons on staff at nearby Marian University, including helping the Knights to an NAIA Elite Eight appearance in 2018 and an NAIA Final Four finish in 2019. The Knights averaged better than 21 wins per season in his three seasons on the sidelines and won 64 percent of their games during that stretch.
Evans specialized in player development at Marian, while also contributing to the film breakdown, recruiting, opponent scouting and game preparation efforts. Prior to Marian, Evans served as the freshman head coach at Cathedral High School and led the team to a 13-game win streak and an Indianapolis City title. He has also served as an assistant coach on the Adidas AAU Circuit with EG10 and on the Under Armour AAU Circuit with G3 Grind.
During his playing career at Marian, Evans was a two a two-time NAIA All-American, earning honors in 2011-12 and 2013-14. He was also a three-time All-Crossroads performer, a two-time team captain and a Capital One Academic All-District Team.
Before transferring to Marian, Evans earned All-CCAC first team honors and was named CCAC Newcomer of the Year at Purdue University Calumet. He also holds the single-game scoring record at Purdue-Calumet with 51 points in a single game.
After his collegiate career, Evans made the Eurobasket Tour Team where he competed against professional teams in Lithuania and Norway. Upon his return overseas, Evans played a season for the hometown Indianapolis Diesels before starting his coaching career.Â
