Dedicated in 1979 with a swing of a racquet by former Indianapolis Mayor Bill Hudnut, the Indianapolis Tennis Center became one of the first symbols in establishing the city as the “Amateur Sports Capital Of The World”. Home to the IUPUI men's and women's tennis teams, the facility included 14 hard outdoor courts over 13-acres, and four clay courts at the time of its opening. The 10,000-seat Stadium Court was the perfect venue for the RCA/Men’s Hardcourt Championships, even from the beginning.
In 1989, an indoor facility was added to The Indianapolis Tennis Center Complex. This facility provided the city it’s first downtown indoor tennis courts and gave tennis lovers an opportunity to play all year round. Six Deco-Turf Ii courts with a state of the art direct lighting system, locker rooms and a Pro Shop added the perfect touches to The Indianapolis Tennis Center.
Over the years, The Indianapolis Tennis Center has hosted many international and national events. The Indianapolis Tennis (formerly RCA) Championships, held each year, has been voted “Tournament Of The Year” several times by the Men’s Professional Tennis Organization. The Center has also hosted the USTA Training Center, the Northeast Regional 12 Zone Team Championships, the USTA National Verifier Training Conference, the Mid-Tac Regional Tournament, the Pearson Ford Tournament and a Davis Cup tie with Belgium.
Among those to compete at the facility are Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, James Blake and Roger Federer.
