NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The IU Indianapolis men's tennis team picked up a pair of singles victories, but host Lipscomb claimed the doubles point and four singles matches to secure a 5-2 win over the Jaguars on Friday (Mar. 13) at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
IU Indy's two points came from the top and bottom of the singles lineup as
Konner Gunwall and
Jai Dutta each recorded hard-fought victories.
Gunwall delivered one of the most dramatic matches of the afternoon at No. 1 singles. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, he rallied to take the second set 6-2 before edging Lipscomb's Facundo Perlov in a tight super tiebreak, 11-9, to earn the win.
Dutta also battled through three sets at No. 6 singles, claiming the opening set 6-3 before Lipscomb's Oliver Thoeny forced a deciding third set. Dutta regrouped and closed out the match with a 7-5 victory to secure IU Indy's second point of the match.
In doubles play, the Jaguars opened strong as the duo of Gunwall and
Owen Nguyen earned a convincing 6-2 win at the No. 1 position over Alex Vlahos and Oskar Szymczak. However, Lipscomb responded with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Lipscomb picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 and added a three-set victory at No. 5 to clinch the team result.
IU Indy will stay in Tennessee to play Austin Peay tomorrow, Saturday, March 14.
