INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men's tennis team dropped a 5–2 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the West Indy Racquet Club. The Jaguars earned a pair of singles victories but were unable to overcome EKU's depth in both singles and doubles play.
IU Indianapolis picked up its first point of the day at No. 3 singles, where
Owen Nguyen delivered a strong performance with a straight-sets win, 6-2, 6-3, over Joao Barreto.
Cameron Kryscio added the Jaguars' second point at No. 5 singles, defeating Ilie Cazac 6-2, 6-4 to keep the match competitive.
Eastern Kentucky secured the overall victory by claiming four of the six singles matches. EKU earned wins at the top two singles positions, including a tightly contested No. 2 match where Marek Nano outlasted
Konner Gunwall in a tiebreak after splitting sets, 4-6, 7-6, 10-5. Additional singles victories at No. 4 and 6 allowed the Colonels to pull away on the scoreboard.
In doubles action, Eastern Kentucky took the doubles point by winning the first two completed matches. Gunwall and Nguyen dropped the No. 1 match, 6-2, while
Eli Mercer and Pumpihat Sukkho fell at No. 2 doubles, 6-3. The No. 3 doubles match featuring
Brandon Pham and
Cameron Kryscio for IU Indy was left unfinished with the Jaguars holding a 4-3 edge when play was halted.
The match marked the season opener for IU Indy, while Eastern Kentucky improved to 2-3 on the year. The Jags will now travel to Northern Illinois to face the Huskies on Friday, January 23 at 1:00 PM.
