YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IU Indianapolis men's basketball team earned a key road win at Youngstown State on Saturday (Feb. 1), fending off the Penguins, 84-79. Freshman
DeSean Goode had a career-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Paul Zilinskas added 20 points, including four treys, and
Jarvis Walker contributed 18 points and five assists. EJ Farmer paced YSU (14-10, 8-5 HL) with 22 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
IU Indy (8-16, 4-9 HL) had struggled to close out games all season long, but reversed fortune on Saturday, making a collection of plays down the stretch to seal the win. The Jaguars had led virtually the entire day before Farmer tied the score at 53 all with 11:09 left on a short jumper. However, IU Indy countered with back-to-back threes from Goode and
Sean Craig to produce a six-point advantage. The Jags extended the lead to 11 with 5:14 left when Walker scored on a tough drive in traffic.
YSU retaliated with six straight, all in the paint, to cut the lead back to five with just under four minutes to play. However, Walker scored on another tough drive with 3:26 remaining going into the game's final media timeout. Walker's final field goal came on a drive with 1:59 to play to push the Jags lead back to six. After YSU cut it to four, freshman
Keenan Garner rebounded a Walker miss and earned a trip to the free throw line to avoid an empty possession.
Collectively, the Jaguars made 9-of-10 free throws in the final 75 seconds to seal the win.
Goode was instrumental in building the lead, scoring 14 of his career-high 23 points in the opening half as the Jaguars built a 39-32 advantage. The Jaguars hit 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from three and held YSU to just 4-of-27 (14.8 percent) from deep.
The Penguins shot an efficient 48 percent from the floor and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, but struggled to get stops against the Jaguars. IU Indy committed just six turnovers and also shot 48 percent for the game.
Alec Millender finished with 10 points, including hitting all five of his free throws, and Craig closed with nine points, all from behind the three-point line.
The win was just IU Indy's third-ever over YSU in the 25 meetings between the two programs. The victory also avenged the earlier home loss to the Penguins from a month earlier.
The Jaguars will return home to host Milwaukee on Wednesday (Feb. 5) at 6:30 p.m. inside the Jungle on ESPN+.
