CLEVELAND - The IU Indianapolis men's basketball team will resume Horizon League play on Monday night (Dec. 29) when the Jaguars trek to Cleveland to face Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. The game can also be heard in Central Indiana on 1430 Indy's Sports Ticket. The Jaguars have dropped 13 straight to the Vikings dating back to 2019, including seven consecutive road losses to CSU. Head coach Ben Howlett's team dropped its most recent game before the Christmas holiday, losing at Grand Canyon, 91-78.
Junior
Kyler D'Augustino pumped in a team-high 24 points and freshman
Maguire Mitchell added 16 points in the loss. It was a one-possession game with 9:29 to play after Mitchell connected on back-to-back treys, but the game shifted when the rookie was slapped with a technical foul for celebrating in the direction of his own bench. GCU responded by outscoring the Jaguars 15-2 over the next six minutes to cement the win.
Sophomore
Aiden Miller emerged off the bench with 11 points, including three threes, and
Kameron Tinsley added 10 points. Senior
Finley Woodward flirted with a double-double with four points, a season-high nine rebounds and seven assists.
D'Augustino leads the team with 16.2 points per game and is shooting 57 percent from the field. Fifth-year
Matt Compas is scoring 11.1 points per game and Mitchell scores 10.7 points per game. Mitchell's 35 made threes are tied for the most in the country by a freshman this season.
QUOTABLE
"(GCU) is a really good team. They have a lot of size and they really attacked us off the dribble. I thought we did a good job of forcing some turnovers and creating some havoc, but we didn't always capitalize on our opportunities. I'm proud of our guys. I think this game continues to prepare us for league play. Now we focus on getting home, getting some rest and getting some league wins," Howlett said following the GCU loss.
