MEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN THE FINAL MINUTE TO LEAGUE CHAMPION CLEVELAND STATE

Jaguars concede the game-winner with 25 seconds to play

INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis men's soccer team proved it could play with the Horizon League's elite on Friday (Oct. 31), but squandered an opportunity for a result as the Jaguars conceded a game-winning goal in the final minute in a 2-1 home loss to Cleveland State. The Jaguars scored first, but yielded goals in the first and final minute of the second half as the visiting Vikings earned the league's regular season title with the victory.

Conversely, the Jags' postseason hopes became a near impossibility with the defeat.

IU Indy (5-8-3, 2-5-1 HL) got off to a quick start as junior defender Noah Kummrow tallied his first career goal in the 15th minute. Sophomore Bali Esquivel centered the ball to Youri Keijser, who laid a pass back to Kummrow. The speedy back lined a shot just inside the post for the day's first goal.

The Jags kept pressure on Cleveland State (7-2-6, 5-0-3 HL) throughout the first half, largely behind the attacking play of Nathaniel Isom and Jose Antonio Herrera. However, the hosts were unable to get anything past CSU goalkeeper Ryan Poling.

After outshooting the Vikings 7-5 in the opening half, CSU leveled the score in the opening minute of the second half. Daniel Celso centered a pass to Uzman Ramees, who redirected a shot just inside the far post for his third score of the year. Although CSU had the better run of play throughout the second half, the game appeared to be destined for a draw until the Vikings got an early Halloween treat in the final minute.

After an IU Indy giveaway, CSU's Lennart Heck recycled the attack with a long ball up the left side to Celso. The CSU attacker fired from the left side and had the shot hit off a defender and into the net for his first score of the year.

CSU closed with a 10-9 shot advantage and 6-2 margin on corner kicks. Herrera attempted a game-high four shots while senior goalkeeper Cameron Maung-Maung made two saves.

The Jaguars will cap the regular season at Oakland on Tuesday (Nov. 4) at 2:00 p.m.
