ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team rallied from a goal down on two different occasions to secure a road result at Oakland on Saturday (Oct. 25) in a 2-2 draw. Freshmen
Shannon Phillips and
Anika Guenther scored goals for the Jaguars while freshman
Maci Sammons and senior
Emma Frey collected assists.
Both Phillips and Guenther helped the Jaguars rally from deficits, including Guenther's final strike in the 82nd minute.
"Today was a hard fought battle and I knew that I had to play my all out for this team and especially the seniors," Guenther said. "This team deserved this game it came down to the very end. Everyone played with heart and we had a talk before the game about playing for each other and not giving up and that's exactly what we did.
"Although we didn't come out with a win, we definitely came out and fought for that game and for each other. I knew that I needed to convert and do all that I could for these girls."
The Jaguars (3-11-3, 2-5-2 HL) went down a goal in the game's ninth minute, but nearly equalized in the 30th minute when
Olivia Hopper had a header tick off the left post and
Hannah Roberson's rebound attempt went wide of target. However, Phillips did get the Jags even just before halftime when she laced a just inside the post off Sammons' assist.
Oakland regained the lead in the 51st minute on an Isabella Bierod goal, forcing the Jaguars to chase the game for the bulk of the second half.
Ultimately, it was Frey's ball over the top to Guenther that led to the rookie's second score of the year. Frey played long service over an OU defender and Guenther flailed on an initial attempt, but regained composure to slip a shot inside the left post.
Both teams had late cracks at go-ahead goals, beginning with an IU Indy corner kick that resulted in a quick Oakland counterattack. However, veteran goalkeeper
Sarah Bambrick made the stop. Moments later,
Emma Antoine earned a final corner kick, but
Caroline Kelley's ensuing attempt flew high of target.
Both teams finished with 12 shots attempts with the Jaguars putting nine on goal. Four Jaguars finished with two attempts apiece with Frey putting both on target.
Bambrick finished with five saves for the Jaguars.
IU Indy will cap the regular season on Wednesday (Oct. 29) with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff with Purdue Fort Wayne at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
