INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy men's tennis team defeated the visiting Eastern Illinois Panthers on Friday afternoon, 6-1. The Jags secured the doubles point and five of the six singles matches.
To open the match, the Jags earned the doubles point, taking the quick 1-0 lead.
Nate Day and Konnor Gunwall took the No. 1 doubles match, 6-2 to give the Jags the advantage.
Kamil Kozerski and
Noah Viste then fell in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, evening doubles play and one match each.
Will Thurin and
Steven Paz then secured the doubles point for IU Indy with the No. 3 match win, 6-4.
After doubles play, the Jags jumped into singles play. IU Indy came out hot with Kozerski sweeping the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Paz helped extend the Jags' lead to 3-0 with the No. 4 singles point at 6-1, 6-1.
The Panthers then got a point back to keep the match alive at 3-1 as
Eli Mercer fell in the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-1.
Thurin and
Pumiphat Sukkho then both finished their matches close to the same time, securing the IU Indy match victory with points in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Sukkho secured the No. 5 singles point in two sets, 7-5, 6-4 while Thurin came from behind to take the No. 6 singles point, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Noah Viste closed out the match on a high note for the Jags, earning the No. 2 singles point, 6-4, 7-6.
The IU Indy men's tennis team is now 2-2 on the season and will next play Dayton on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11:00 AM at West Indy.
