ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IU Indianapolis men's soccer team collected a road result on Saturday (Sept. 28), playing Oakland to a scoreless draw.
Mason Taylor registered six saves in net for the Jaguars as the guests were outshot by a 13-10 margin, including 6-4 on frame.
The point was a welcome outcome after the Jaguars had begun Horizon League play with back-to-back losses.
"A clean sheet on the road is a massive positive, especially after the last couple games," head coach
Sid van Druenen said. "We felt like we've conceded some soft goals, so it was good to see we've improved on some things, mainly with press defense and the tactical setup in transition.
"The flip side of that is you need to score a goal to get the win and unfortunately we didn't do that today."
The Jaguars (3-4-2, 0-2-1 HL) outshot the Golden Grizzlies 6-2 in the opening half, largely behind
Ethan Vermillion. Two of the attempts were on frame as
Gijs Velings tested OU goalkeeper Alex Flowers early and Vermillion and
Bali Esquivel also had shots on target.
The game turned at the break as Oakland (3-4-2, 1-0-2 HL) was the more offensive minded squad over the final 45 minutes. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Jaguars 11-4 after the break and ended the day with a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Vermillion finished with a game-high four shot attempts while
Mano Karjian had two in limited action off the bench. Luke Benford and Jack Klomparens had a team-high three shots each for the Golden Grizzlies.
For Taylor, it was his third clean sheet of the season and 23rd of his collegiate career. It was just the second time this season that Oakland had been shut out.
The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 4 when they host Detroit Mercy at 6:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
