YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Jazmyn Turner and
Katie Davidson each tally double-digit points in IUPUI's Horizon League tournament loss at Youngstown State on Tuesday, March 5, 73-50. Turner, a graduate student was one rebound short of a double-double with 17 points and nine boards.
Offensive fouls and turnovers cost the Jags early in the game, giving the Penguins momentum which hurt in the long run.
Youngstown State was efficient from three to put the Jags away with a 50.0 percent mark behind the arc. Malia Magestro led the Penguins with 18 points, shooting 7-for-11 form the floor while Haley Thierry earned a perfect mark behind the arc at 3-for-3, totaling 12 points. Abby Liber added 13 points.
Youngstown State's Thierry set the tone early, scoring the first points of the game with a three. IUPUI answered with their own three-pointer from
Faith Stinson, the lone three of the game for the Jags, to tie the game at 3-3. After trading buckets back-and-forth for a 10-9 advantage Penguins, Youngstown State finished the first quarter on a 4-0 run at 14-9.
In the second quarter, the Jags were within five at 24-19 when Youngstown State sunk a three, taking their largest lead of the game so far at 27-19. IUPUI cut the deficit back down to five with two minutes left to play before the Penguins went on a 6-0 run to take a 33-22 lead before the half.
After trading baskets to open the third quarter, Turner sunk a couple layups with an extra point to cut the Penguins' lead to six at 37-31. Youngstown State started to pull away with an 8-1 run with three minutes left at 46-32. IUPUI continued to scratch away with Turner taking contact under the basket and tallying two free throws, 46-34. Youngstown State once again closed out the quarter on a run, this time 8-1 for a 19-point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Jags totaled 15 points compared to the Penguins 19 points in the final quarter, falling 73-50.
Turner in her final game as a Jaguar totaled 17 points and nine rebounds to lead IUPUI while Davidson added 10 points and two rebounds.
Faith Stinson totaled seven points and eight rebounds while
Abby Wolterman added six points and five rebounds.
The Jags close out the season with a 7-23 overall record while Youngstown State moves on to the quarterfinals round of the Horizon League Tournament at No. 2 Green Bay.
