INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men's tennis team earned the 4-3 victory over Horizon League foe, Youngstown State on Friday afternoon. The Jags jumped out to a fast start with the doubles point then earned three singles points to secure the win.
"The guys showed real toughness and grit to pull off the victory against a tough conference opponent today," said head coach
Bren Vasalakis. "It took a team effort and they all stepped up."
IUPUI earned the doubles point to start the match.
Luka Rodic and Paz took the number two doubles win, 6-3 while
Noah Viste and
Will Thurin secured the point in the number three spot, 6-4.
Kamil Kozerski and
Emil Jankowski were winning in the number one spot, 5-4 when doubles play went final.
After taking the 1-0 lead, singles play started off slow for the Jags but they quickly picked it up.
Eli Mercer earned a quick two set victory in the number six spot, 6-4, 6-1. Rodic followed with the number five singles point, 6-1, 7-6. Paz then clinched the match victory with a come from behind, three set victory in the number two spot, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Kozerski fell in the number one spot, 6-3, 6-3 while
Nate Day lost in the number four spot, 6-2, 7-6. Viste fought to take his number three match to three sets but he ended up on the wrong side of the outcome, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
IUPUI is now 2-1 in Horizon League play and will next host Cleveland State tomorrow, March 30. The Jaguars and Vikings are set for a 2:30 PM first serve.
