FISHERS, Ind. – The IUPUI swim and dive team opened up the 2023-24 season at the Butler Double Duals on Sunday afternoon. The men's team finished 3-0 with wins over Xavier, Saint Louis and Bellarmine while the women's team finished 1-3 with a win over Bellarmine.
The meet started with the 400 yard medley relay with the men's team finished second behind Xavier.
Grayson Tidwell,
Isaac Wilson,
Dakota Kinder and
David Niemiec finished with a time of 3:28.59 to take second place. The women's team finished in eighth.
Next up was the 1000 free with freshman
Samantha Lee coming in at fourth with a time of 11:06.16 and
Lylah Hutson finishing in tenth. On the men's side, freshman
Youssef Magdy took first place with a time of 9:43.13 while Michael Edson took fifth with a time of 9:58.10.
Nathan Rariden then earned a first place tie in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:43.14 while
Jack Gallob took fourth (1:44.96) and Wilson took fifth (1:44.99).
Priscilla Zavala (25.61) and
Tori Barnet (25.67) finished back-to-back at 11
th and 12
th in the women's 50 free.
Brady Gray (22.27) took seventh while
Ben Rocks (22.38) took ninth and
David Niemiec (22.39) took tenth in the men's 50 free.
Victoria Surdyka took fifth in the women's 200 yard IM with a time of 2:15.06 while Tidwell led the men's team with a first place finish in the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:56.67.
Turner Long took third at 1:58.49.
Wilson collected another top five finish in the 200 fly coming in at fourth with a time of 1:57.28. Rariden earned another first place finish with a time of 47.44 in the 200 free. Tidwell (1:52.85) and Gallob (1:53.89) finished back-to-back in first and second in the 200 back.
Emily Hoekstra took fifth in the women's 500 free while Lee followed in sixth. Magdy collected his second first place finish of the meet taking the top spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:42.26. Long finished in fifth in the men's 200 breast while Kinder followed in sixth.
The Jags finished in fourth in the women's 400 free relay with Zavala, Barnet, Hannah Barton and Kate Larson recording a time of 3:40.22. The men's team, made up of Niemiec, Rariden,
Evan Hernandez and Magdy came in second with a time of 3:12.27 to finish out the meet.
The men's team defeated Xavier with a score of 120.50 to 116.50, took down Saint Louis at 153.00 to 90.00 and beat Bellarmine at 174.00 to 62.00. The women's team fell to Xavier at 181.00 to 56.00 and Saint Louis beat the Jags at 179.00 to 63.00. Butler took down the women's team with a score of 119.00 to 110.00. The women's team earned the win over Bellarmine with a score of 140.00 to 90.00.
IUPUI will next face Southern Indiana in the world famous IU Natatorium on October 7 at 5:00 PM.
