MEN'S SOCCER FALLS ON THE ROAD IN PRESEASON OPENER

IUPUI drops a heartbreaker at Northwestern, 2-1

8/13/2023 6:14:00 PM

EVANSTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team scored first, but was unable to secure the victory as the Jaguars allowed two unanswered goals, the second of which coming in the game's final minute of a 2-1 loss at Northwestern on Sunday (Aug. 13). NU's Henri Richter deposited the winner on a header with under a minute remaining before the final whistle.

"Despite conceding with a minute to go, this was a great first preseason test for us," head coach Sid van Druenen said. "It was a very competitive and high intensity first half and a second half where we gave a lot of new guys an opportunity to play and see how it feels to compete at this level. We got better today and that is all that matters right now."

Senior Logan Finnegan netted a gorgeous goal off an errant clearance in the 17th minute to initiate the day's scoring. IUPUI nearly went up 2-0, but NU's sophomore goalkeeper Rafael Ponce de Leon stopped a breakaway moments after Finnegan's first goal, keeping the margin the same. NU equalized before halftime, capping a hard fought opening 45 minutes.

Things stayed that way for the bulk of the second half before the Wildcats' Richter scored on a header in the final minute.

"(It was) tough to lose it in the end, but we saw a lot from different guys in different positions, giving us confidence for the season because we will have depth, which is so crucial as we go for the (Horizon League) championship," Finnegan said.

IUPUI will return home to host Marian University at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night (Aug. 16). Admission will be FREE of charge for Wednesday's preseason contest.
