DETROIT - The IUPUI basketball team shot 51 percent from the floor and held Detroit Mercy to under 42 percent, but was ultimately outgunned from the free throw line as the host Titans fended off the Jaguars, 81-68 inside Calihan Hall. UDM's Antoine Davis finished with 31 points, six steals and five assists while connecting on 13-of-14 foul shots in the win.
Freshman
Vincent Brady II led three Jaguars in double-figures with 13 points and five boards before fouling out and
John Egbuta closed with 11 points and five rebounds off the IUPUI bench.
Chris Osten closed with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The two teams were all square at 33 all at intermission and were still even at 46 all with 12:39 remaining when Egbuta completed a three-point play. However, Detroit Mercy (13-16, 9-9 HL) outscored the Jaguars 21-3 over the next five-plus minutes to take full control. IUPUI was limited to just one field goal during that span - a
DJ Jackson layup - as the Titans ran away with the game.
"We had that stretch where we turned it over and let them get out in transition and get their energy going. They got some easy ones and that really swung the momentum," head coach
Matt Crenshaw said. "I thought we had a good gameplan and for the most part, we stuck to it.
"Offensively, we were good in the half court and got some really good shots."
IUPUI (4-25, 1-17 HL) used the three-point line to play the Titans even in the first half, draining 5-of-7 first half attempts.
Cooper Dewitt came off the bench to drain a pair and
Armon Jarrard also drilled a wing three before the break.
However, turnovers mounted as IUPUI closed with 17 miscues, leading to 23 Titan points.
IUPUI's top scorer,
Jlynn Counter, was factored out of the game due to foul trouble and finished with just five points and three assists in 18 minutes.
Marlon Taylor, making his second collegiate start, had six points, five boards and three blocked shots in just 10 minutes.
The Jaguars will return home to host Robert Morris on Thursday, Feb. 23 inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. for the backend of a hoops doubleheader. Fans are encouraged to wear black as part of BLACKOUT NIGHT, sponsored by the IUPUI Africana Studies Program, Black Student Union, African Student Association and Black Faculty & Staff Council.
