JAGUARS DROP HORIZON LEAGUE OPENER AT WRIGHT STATE, 103-74

Senior Bryce Monroe tallies a team-high 20 points in the defeat

DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Bryce Monroe matched his season-high with 20 points and junior Jlynn Counter added 17, including 15 in the second half, but the Jaguars were outgunned by a superior Wright State squad on Wednesday night (Nov. 29), 103-74.

Tanner Holden paced five Raiders in double-digits with 26 points and Brandon Noel finished with a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Wright State shot 61.2 percent from the floor and 8-of-20 (40 percent) from three while IUPUI was held to 40 percent overall. Wright State bullied their way to a 39-24 advantage off the glass and decisive 60-24 margin in points in the paint.

The Jaguars did the bulk of their damage from the foul line, hitting 28-of-36 (77.8 percent) attempts, including 23-of-26 in the second half. Both Monroe (9-9) and Counter (8-8) enjoyed perfect performances from the stripe.

"It's always a tough challenge to stop (Wright State) offensively. They're efficient in what they do and they can attack from all three levels," head coach Matt Crenshaw said. "They spread you out with their shooters and they have really skilled bigs.

"Holden is a really tough matchup and I thought played one of his better games of the season tonight. Now we have a quick turnaround to prepare for a really good Northern Kentucky team on Saturday."

IUPUI (3-5, 0-1 HL) got the start it wanted, holding Wright State (3-4, 1-0 HL) off the scoreboard until the 16:14 mark, but didn't take full advantage, only scoring three points of its own during that span. The Raiders surged out to a 19-10 lead, capped by a Logan Woods trey, before IUPUI answered with five straight from Monroe, including a long three.

The hosts rattled off a 12-0 run to take control at 31-15 before the Jaguars showed some life before intermission. Kidtrell Blocker initiated back-to-back transition buckets from Vincent Brady II and Abdou Samb before Holden closed the half with a three-point play.

After trailing 43-28 at the break, IUPUI never truly threatened after intermission, despite trimming WSU's once 20-point lead back to 13 on two different occasions.

Blocker just missed his first career double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists and sophomore Abdou Samb tallied a season-high 11 points off the bench. Brady contributed six points and four rebounds as well.

IUPUI will return home to host Northern Kentucky in Horizon League play on Saturday (Dec. 2) at noon inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) describe the action.
