DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI basketball team will open Horizon League play on Wednesday night (Nov. 29) at Wright State at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. The Jaguars are seeking to snap an 11-game skid against the Raiders and climb back to .500 on the season.
IUPUI (3-4, 0-0 HL) is coming off a 78-70 win over Cleary University to stop a recent four-game slide. Junior
Jlynn Counter scored a game-high 21 points and sophomore
DJ Jackson pumped in 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting off the bench.
Bryce Monroe added 17 points and five assists piloting the offense.
Sophomore
Vincent Brady II added nine points off the bench and graduate transfer
Qwanzi Samuels grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, 11 coming off the defensive glass.
Wednesday's game kicks off a quick two-game start to Horizon League play before the Jaguars return to non-conference play for the bulk of December. IUPUI will return home to host Northern Kentucky on Saturday at noon at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to benefit the community in need and the Ruth Lilly Women and Children's Center.
MR. DO-IT-ALL
In his second season with the program, junior guard
Jlynn Counter has become the Jaguars' Mr. Do It All, leading the team in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounding (5.0 rpg), assists (2.4 apg) and field goal percentage (52.9%).
Counter, a preseason Second Team All-Horizon League pick, tallied his 500th career point against Elon on Nov. 17 and enters today with 560 points in his two-year career.
His 21-point (7-14 FG, 3-4 3's, 4-6 FT) effort against Cleary on Saturday was his 12th career 20-point game.
50-40-90
The shooting line of 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three and 90 percent from the foul line is a bit of a holy grail for basketball players, having only been achieved by 11 players in college basketball history.
Albeit small samples sizes, both
Jlynn Counter and
DJ Jackson are flirting with the numbers to start this season.
Counter: 52.9 FG% / 50.0 3FG% / 55.6 FT%
Jackson: 51.0 FG% / 25.0 3FG% / 85.7 FT%
Counter is coming off a career-high three made threes in the win over Cleary and has made at least half of his field goal attempts in five of the team's seven games. Jackson, coming off a season-high 19-point effort (8-14 FG, 1-1 3's, 2-3 FT) is fifth on the team in field goal attempts (49), but second in field goal percentage (51.0%).
FOUR AND COUNTING
Senior guard
Bryce Monroe comes in having scored in double-digits in IUPUI's last four games. During that span, Monroe is averaging 13.3 points and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 38.3 percent from the floor.
FREE MONEY
IUPUI is currently 53rd in the country in free throw percentage, hitting 75.7 percent as a team.
NINE MAN ROTATION
Nine different Jaguars are playing at least 12 minutes per game, led by
Bryce Monroe (28.3 mpg) down to
Yves Nkomba (12.7 mpg).
Seven of the nine have scored in double-digits at least once this year as Counter and Monroe have five games in double-figures.
DJ Jackson has scored in double-digits twice and
Kidtrell Blocker,
Vincent Brady II,
John Egbuta and
Abdou Samb each have one double-digit scoring game.
SEEING RED
It's likely that both Amhad and
Armon Jarrard will redshirt this season. Amhad missed the entire summer and preseason after suffering an injury last season and Armon was limited to just three games this season while playing through an injury. He was shutdown after trying to play at Indiana State on Nov. 14.
The Jarrards are one of 21 sets of brothers playing for the same team this season and one of nine sets of twins in Division I basketball.
FIRST TO TIP
IUPUI was the first team in the country to tip-off the 2023-24 season, starting at 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 6 in front of a crowd of 4,867 on the annual NCAA 'Readers Become Leaders' Day at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
The 4,867 represented a new home attendance record for the Jaguars, eclipsing the previous mark of 4,114 from last year's similar event.
ROAD KILL
The road win at Valpo was a welcome event, marking IUPUI's first road win since winning at Robert Morris on Feb. 17, 2022. It was the first road non-conference victory since winning at South Florida on Nov. 13, 2019 at the Cayman Islands Classic.
BENCH WORK
IUPUI is averaging 27.6 points per game from its reserves this season and has gotten at least 22 bench points in all seven games (including three games of 30+).
DJ Jackson (9.0 ppg) and
Vincent Brady II (7.1) have led the reserves with each having scored in double-digits at least once off the IUPUI bench.
FIRST MAN OFF
Sophomore
Abdou Samb (4.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg) has been IUPUI's first man off the bench in six of seven games this season, including six straight since the opener.
PAINT CREW
IUPUI has outscored five of its seven opponents in the paint this season, outscoring foes by four points per game inside the paint.
