MADISON, Wisc. - Seniors
Ellie Cates and
Madison Fry led the way for an undermanned IUPUI women's cross country team at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 10) in Wisconsin. Cates, who was unsure if she'd be able to run due to injury, placed 101st of 231 runners while classmate
Madison Fry crossed in 122nd overall.
Cates was consistent from the opening gun, crossing at 22:14.9 in her season finale. Fry moved up throughout the race with a strong final 2K, ultimately finishing at 22:32.6.
"It was a great way to end the season. I haven't raced as well as I have wanted to all season, so it was great to have a solid race today to end out my senior season," Fry said. "It was great having all the seniors racing today and just that group of girls toeing the start as we all knew that we were racing for each other and to just have a great end to our season and cross country careers."
Hannah Sale turned in a time of 23:32.1 to place 179th and
Kara Krol spun a time of 24:34.7.
IUPUI had just six runners, five seniors, at its disposal heading into Friday's meet and freshman
Grace Bragg was unable to make the start as previously expected.
Sophie Reichard pulled up with dizziness early in the race, leaving the Jaguars with just four finishers, unable to factor in the team scoring.
Notre Dame blitzed the field to cruise to the team win while host Wisconsin was second overall, just ahead of third-place Michigan State. Notre Dame's Olivia Markezich finished first overall at 19:55.1, 12 seconds ahead of Ohio State's Addie Engel.
