INDIANAPOLIS -
The IUPUI women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day by getting back into the win column against Green Bay following their tie with Wright State earlier this week. A goal in the 56th minute from Senior
Sam Slimak secured Jaguar momentum for the remainder of the game and provided the winning margin.
Junior goalkeeper
Ashton Kudlo recorded her fifth shutout and the Jaguars' third consecutive.
"I was just taking the game one moment at a time," Kudlo said following the Senior Day ceremonies.
The first half was marked by freshman forward
Caroline Kelley's eight shot attempts. Despite none of them catching the back of the net, IUPUI held 61 percent of the possession and were able to keep constant pressure on the Phoenix goalkeeper. Crafty work on the defensive end from
Sarah Henson and
Maddie Long in some one-on-one situations ensured there were no clear lanes to the goal for the Green Bay offense.
One breakaway was stifled by a well-played one-on-one from Kudlo against Green Bay's Aleah Reesman with 14 minutes remaining in the half for one of Kudlo's four saves on the day.
In the second half, Green Bay strung together a couple deep possessions early. However, any momentum that the Phoenix had left the field when senior forward
Emma Antoine gained possession near the top right corner of the box. A perfectly placed pass to Slimak was redirected into the bottom left corner of the goal for the Jaguars only score of the afternoon.
"There were a lot of emotions today – excitement and joy from playing with each other since freshman year," Slimak stated. "Regardless of who got the goal, it was just a win in general for our team."
It was a clean game from the Jaguars as no cards were dealt, and crisp passing from freshman midfielder
Emily Tobin helped IUPUI maintain possession in key moments.
"This victory symbolized the toughness of this senior class," head coach
Chris Johnson remarked. "I thought this group did a great job of handling the challenges they were faced with…They stuck with it, and they've grown and developed into a great group of leaders."
Looking forward, Johnson made it clear that Senior Day was a success, but there's improvements to be made heading into the final games prior to the Horizon League Tournament, namely in the team's set pieces. IUPUI was awarded nine total corner kicks, but were unable to translate those opportunities into goals in their efforts today.
The Jaguars look to extend their undefeated streak as they host Oakland on Thursday (Oct. 12) at 5:00 p.m. IUPUI has only four remaining games before making their run for a Horizon League championship.
