MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The IUPUI women's soccer team collected a critical road victory on Saturday (Oct. 21) as the Jaguars blanked a powerful Robert Morris attack in a 1-0 triumph. Sophomore goalkeeper
Cailynn Junk registered four saves to improve to 3-1 on the year and freshman
Caroline Kelley netted her seventh score of the year for the day's only offense.
"It was a great team effort today," Junk said. "It was a win we needed to get on the road and we were able to dig it out. Being able to get the clean sheet was a job that needed to be done and we couldn't have done it without the help of the defense, who stayed organized and connected."
Offensively, IUPUI (10-3-4, 4-1-4 HL) struck early and was out on the front foot for the bulk of the first half. Kelley scored off a
Kailyn Smith assist in the game's ninth minute to stake the guests to a quick lead.
IUPUI stayed on the attack, outshooting RMU (10-4-3, 4-4-1 HL) 11-4 in the opening half and earning a 5-0 margin on corner kicks.
Carlie Werner and
Sam Slimak tested RMU keeper Brenna Murray early on as she ultimately finished with seven saves.
In the second half, RMU was able to tilt the field back towards level, but was unable to solve Junk and the Jaguars' defense. Junk closed with four stops while Smith,
Katie Hoog and
Emily Tobin all played all 90 minutes in front of her.
Kelley fired a game-high seven shots while Slimak had four attempts, all on target.
The win gave the Jaguars' three key points in the standings as IUPUI inched closer to a first round bye in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament.
"This was a big win on the road because it puts us three points closer to where we want to be going into the conference tournament," Kelley said. "I'm very proud of the team for fighting the entire game to keep our early lead. There were a lot of positives to take away from this game and carry into our last regular season game."
IUPUI will close out the regular season on Wednesday night (Oct. 25) against Purdue Fort Wayne at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 6:00 p.m. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
