PEORIA, Ill. - Sophomore
Julie Smith was one of five Jaguars to run a new 6K personal best on Friday (Oct. 13) as an undermanned IUPUI group competed in the Bradley 'Pink' Classic at Newman Golf Course. Despite muddy conditions, Smith shed more than a minute off her prior best and paced the Jaguars, running a time of 22:27.9 to place 79th of 258 runners.
Smith's time was 77 seconds better than her previous best.
"My race didn't go exactly as planned - I had some stomach troubles unfold around 3K, which led to a poor second half, but I knew I had my whole team pushing hard with me and that motivated me to keep going," Smith said. "The conditions weren't ideal for a fast time with all the mud, but they were perfect for a memorable race to look back on and laugh about.
"Our team has been doing a great job at keeping morale high at low times, so it was overall a good day for the Jags."
Head coach
Antonio McDaniel's team knew it would be a slog from the opening gun as both
Ellie Cates and
Laci Provenzano were sidelined due to injuries. Smith helped fill the void with a new personal best and senior
Madison Fry spun a time of 22:38.6 to place 97th overall.
Freshman
Grace Bragg ran a personal best time of 23:35.0 and
Hannah Sale clocked a time of 23:39.6.
Kara Krol finished at 24:25.6 and
Hannah Robbins had a personal best time of 25:28.0.
Sophie Reichard capped the team's seven entries with a time of 26:20.7.
IUPUI finished 27th in the Red Race with 698 points.
In the White Race,
Brooke Hansen clocked a personal best time of 25:28.9 and
Rebecca Orvis finished at 26:47.7.
Julynne Spidell also ended her day with a personal record, crossing at 27:19.4.
North Dakota State won the team title with 126 points and Drake's Brooke Mullins took the individual tape in a time of 20:33.20.
The Jaguars will next compete at the Horizon League Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Fairborn Community Park in Fairborn, Ohio.
