JAGUARS DROP OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER TO OAKLAND, 83-77

Freshman Vincent Brady II scores a career-high 23 points in the loss

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team came up on the wrong side of an overtime thriller with Oakland University inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Thursday night (Jan. 19), falling to the Golden Grizzlies, 83-77. Freshman Vincent Brady II scored a career-high 23 points, including four treys, and sophomore Jlynn Counter added 22 points and seven assists in the loss. John Egbuta continued his hot play of late with 13 points off the IUPUI bench.

Jalen Moore had a game-high 27 points and seven assists for the Golden Grizzlies and Trey Townsend contributed 26 points and 15 boards for Oakland. Moore forced overtime with a long wing three with 3.0 seconds left in regulation and then scored nine of his game-high 27 in overtime.

"Man, we fought tonight. We went toe-to-toe with one of the hottest teams in our league. Our freshmen and young guys grew up tonight. Down the stretch, we're out there with three freshmen going against juniors and seniors and playing well," head coach Matt Crenshaw said. "I went in (the locker room) and told the guys how proud I am of them. We had our chances and fought our butts off to have a chance to win it.

"Credit to Oakland. They made the plays when they needed them."

After trailing by as many as nine early in the second half, IUPUI (3-17, 0-9 HL) used an 11-0 run to seize a four-point lead, punctuated by Brady's two-handed dunk that became an and-1 opportunity with 8:57 left. Things stayed tight down the stretch with neither team leading by more than three over the final six minutes. Counter staked IUPUI to a 68-65 lead with 13 seconds left by converting both ends of a one-and-one before Moore sent the game to overtime in front of a large contingent of friends and family.

Moore hit a stepback trey to open the scoring in overtime and Oakland never trailed in the extra period after his make.

IUPUI finished at 44.6 percent from the field and 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from three, but was outscored 19-12 at the foul line. Oakland shot 48.3 percent from the field at 37.5 percent from three-point range.

Three IUPUI players - Cooper Dewitt, DJ Jackson and Chris Osten - finished with five points each while Osten, Brady and Jackson grabbed a team-high six boards each. Jonah Carrasco closed with two points, five boards and three blocked shots off the IUPUI bench.
