INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team played Wright State to a 2-2 draw on Sunday (Sept. 25) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium, fueled by first half goals from
Maya Lacognato and
Emma Antoine. The Jaguars were stung by an unfortunate penalty kick call in the game's 86th minute, allowing Wright State's Marcella Sizer to tally her second goal of the contest and get the match level with just more than four minutes to play.
IUPUI (5-1-5, 1-1-2 HL) outshot the Raiders by a 20-11 margin and had seven corner kicks to WSU's four.
"I was really proud of us today," Lacognato said. "Both the energy and intensity were there. We all went out there and worked for each other and every person contributed in all aspects. We got a little unlucky at the end, but the chances are coming and things are starting to click for us. We just have to keep it up and focus our attention on the next game."
IUPUI went in front in the 21st minute as the Raiders all but gift wrapped the game's first score. WSU goalkeeper Jessika Seward mishit a return pass from one of her defensive backs and spun the ball directly in front of her own net. Senior
Maya Lacognato won a foot race and tapped the ball over the endline for her team-high sixth score of the season as she and a defender converged on the scene at the same time. Sizer pulled WSU even in the 34th minute when she settled a diagonal pass from Amber Branum at the far post, composed herself and laced a shot past
Ashton Kudlo for her third score of the season.
IUPUI had an immediate answer as Antoine used her jets to outrun a WSU defender before driving a low liner past Seward, just inside the near post.
The Jaguars maintained the 2-1 lead more more than half the match until an unfortunate whistle tiled the outcome. Freshman defender
Sophia White was called for a foul well inside the IUPUI 18-yard box, leading to Sizer's PK opportunity. Sizer easily rolled a shot inside the left post for her fourth score of the season.
IUPUI pressed for a late winner and nearly got it when Lacognato played a great ball into
Sam Slimak in the final minute, but her redirect when just wide of frame. Slimak tried a blast with just more than 20 seconds left that Seward gloved for her fifth and final save of the day. Kudlo registered three saves for the Jaguars, all in the first half.
The draw keeps IUPUI squarely in the middle of the #HLWSOC standings as the Jaguars now have five points in league play.
The Jaguars will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 1) when they host Oakland University at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
