FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team was a whisker away from earning a road win and a full three points, but ultimately had to settle for a 2-2 draw and a road result at Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday (Sept. 18). IUPUI got first career goals from both
Abbie Schad and
Carlie Werner, but yielded a pair of second half scores, the second coming with just two seconds remaining in regulation to deadlock the score.
IUPUI (5-0-4, 1-0-1 HL) seized control of the game late in the first half, beginning with Schad's score in the 41st minute.
Makenna Collins delivered a corner kick in towards the near post and Schad redirected a shot past PFW's Samantha Castaneda for the day's first score. IUPUI added insurance in the 44th minute when
Emma Antoine earned a penalty kick as she was pulled down well inside the penalty area on her way to goal. Werner took the ensuing PK and drove a shot past Castaneda for her first career tally.
The IUPUI scores came on the heels of an
Emma Manolovic rip in the 39th minute that went just wide of frame from long distance.
The hosts chipped away in the 60th minute, scoring on a penalty kick of their own.
Sophia White,
Ashton Kudlo and a Mastodon attacker all converged on a loose ball just inside the penalty area, ultimately leading to the PK call. Zoe Greenhalge capitalized on the chance for her second score of the year.
The IUPUI defense danced with fire for much of the second half as Purdue Fort Wayne outshot the Jaguars 7-5 after the break.
Even after staving off some PFW opportunities, the Jaguars went on the attack for a late insurance goal, getting clean looks from
Emma Frey and
Maya Lacognato in the game's final minute. After Lacognato fired high of frame with just more than 30 seconds left, Purdue Fort Wayne hurried forward with Gigi Ricciardi launching a long lead pass into IUPUI territory.
The ball came free to Rylee Vruggink, who rolled a shot just past tracking defender
Maya Turner, for an equalizer.
IUPUI finished with a 14-12 shot advantage with
Sam Slimak registering a team-high four attempts. Kudlo closed with three stops while Castaneda made five for the hosts.
The Jaguars will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 22, when they trek to Northern Kentucky for a Horizon League contest.
