COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Junior
Emma Antoine netted her first career goal in the 81st minute and redshirt sophomore
Ashton Kudlo authored her second career shutout as the IUPUI women's soccer team went on the road to win its 2022 season opener at Tennessee Tech, 1-0, on Thursday night (Aug. 18). Antoine broke a scoreless draw by drilling a shot past TTU's Maggie Conrad late in the contest to fuel the victory.
At the other end, Kudlo was masterful behind a stout defensive line, making two saves to earn her second shutout in three career appearances.
Antoine helped initiate her own game-winner, earning a free kick just beyond the 18-yard mark in the 80th minute.
Maya Turner's restart deflected off the TTU wall and back towards the midfield before being recycled by
Alex Stocker and the IUPUI attack. The ball was lofted towards the box where
Emma Manolovic and a TTU defender converged on the play before the ball squirted free to Antoine. The Carmel-native finished the play from there, tucking a shot into the upper-right corner.
From there, the IUPUI defense played keep away for much of the final eight-plus minutes to complete the road win.
"To be honest, it's one of the top five feelings I've ever felt," Antoine said. "I wanna give a shoutout to the whole team for dawging our gameplan and especially to Alex and Emma for making the goal happen. And to Ashton for the shutout."
IUPUI finished with a 10-9 shot advantage and held TTU to just two shots on frame.
Neither team mustered much in the attack in the opening half as both sides combined on just eight shot attempts, none of which were particularly dangerous. The Jaguars' best look came on a drive from
Leah Shumate from distance that Conrad easily plucked in the 31st minute. In the 43rd minute,
Jessica Jacobs put an attempt on target from outside the 18-yard box that Conrad played on a bounce.
Kudlo's lone save in the opening half came in the 29th minute when she easily caught a blast from long range off the boot of Emily Carlevato.
Sam Slimak and
Alex Ludolph led IUPUI with two shots each and Turner led the field players with 82 minutes of work as Johnson shuffled in 19 different field players. Antoine, who had IUPUI's lone goal in the two preseason games as well, netted her first score in her 23rd career game on Thursday night.
IUPUI will cap the weekend with a road match at SIUE on Sunday (Aug. 21) at 2:00 p.m. CT (3 Eastern) on ESPN+.
