INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI Athletics Department and head basketball coach Matt Crenshaw announced the signing of San Diego-transfer Bryce Monroe to departmental grant-in-aid as he'll join the Jaguars for the upcoming season. Monroe, a 5-foot-11 guard, played last season at San Diego and was the 2021 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year as a freshman at Sam Houston State. He comes to the Jaguars with three years of eligibility remaining, taking into account a COVID season.

"Bryce is going to come in and make an immediate impact on our program," Crenshaw said. "He's a really gifted offensive player. He can create his own shot, get to the rim, create for others and shoots it well. He's a floor general in that he can make an offense go and knows how to put guys in a position to be successful.

"We're excited to get him to Indiana, get him on campus and get to work with him."

Monroe averaged 6.3 points and 2.2 assists per game at USD last season, but missed the latter portion of the season due to injury. He shot 34.5 percent from three-point range and scored in double-figures four times in 18 games, keyed by a 15-point, 4-rebound effort against San Francisco on Jan. 8. Monroe played his freshman campaign at Sam Houston State and was named the 2021 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year. He came off the bench in all 27 games that season, averaging 9.6 points and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 83.3 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double-figures 13 times, including a season-high 26 points against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 10.

Monroe was among the top prep players in the state of California in 2020, graduating from Bishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He received the 2019-20 Kevin Restani Basketball Trophy, awarded to the high school Player of the Year for the city of San Francisco. He was named first team All-WCAL for three consecutive seasons and led Riordan to the program's first WCAL Championship since 2007. Riordan advanced to the D1 NorCal semifinals before the season was cut short due to COVID in 2020.

Monroe becomes IUPUI's seventh addition for the 2022-2023 campaign.
