AMES, Iowa - The IUPUI basketball team will officially tip-off the 2022-2023 campaign on Monday night (Nov. 7) when the Jaguars take on Iowa State inside Hilton Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. Central (8 Eastern) on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Monday's game marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Head coach
Matt Crenshaw's team opened the preseason with a 101-60 romp of Brescia University on Oct. 27 as five different IUPUI players hit for double-digits and the Jaguars shot 63.3 percent overall and 55 percent from three-point range. Freshman
DJ Jackson scored a game-high 16 points off the bench and freshman
Vincent Brady II scored 14 points. Junior
Daylan Hamilton added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds while
Jlynn Counter tallied 12 points. Graduate
Jonah Carrasco rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points off the bench.
IUPUI shot 70 percent from the floor in the first half and built a 52-27 halftime lead.
The Jaguars were picked to finish 11th in the #HLMBB Preseason Polls and were also tabbed 11th by virtually every preseason publication. However, the emphatic exhibition win provided a glimmer of optimism on the heels of an ugly 2021-22 season.
Crenshaw's retooled roster boasts a pair of Division I transfers, four junior college transfers and four true freshmen in the 10-man recruiting class. It's highly likely that all five starters will be newcomers in the season opener on Monday night.
QUOTABLE
"I liked a lot of what I saw tonight. I thought we played with a lot of energy, we were unselfish and guys were looking to make the extra pass. We turned down some good shots in an effort to get some great shots and that turned in to us being able to score 100 points and shoot 63 percent. We have a lot of stuff that we have to clean up, but it was good to get a lot of guys some minutes tonight and get some experience under our belts," Crenshaw said following the exhibition win over Brescia.
TIDBITS
- IUPUI freshmen combined to score 50 points in the exhibition game win over Brescia and newcomers scored 91 of the team's 101 points.
- IUPUI returns just 9.1 points per game from a season ago as Crenshaw's squad returns just two letterwinners in
Boston Stanton III (4.7 ppg) and Carrasco (4.4 ppg).
