MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The IUPUI men's soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten and four-game conference winning streaks come to a screeching halt on Wednesday (Nov. 2) as the Jaguars fell on the road at Robert Morris in both teams' regular season finale, 5-0. The host Colonials buried the Jags with a four goal avalanche in a 26-minute stretch that spanned the two halves. The game was a must-win scenario for the hosts and a luxury for the Jaguars, who had already earned a spot in the Horizon League Tournament over the weekend.
RMU (6-7-2, 4-3-2 HL) seized the opportunity, going ahead late in the first half and running away from there on a day in which they outshot the Jaguars by a 13-3 margin.
"Credit, obviously, to Robert Morris," head coach
Sid van Druenen said. "They wanted it more. They showed it from the first second to the last second. We never showed up. We never dreamt big enough to believe that we could win the (Horizon League) regular season. I think we were happy with clinching the third spot and I think that was visible.
"We were never good enough. So today, it stings - very disappointing, obviously. It doesn't take away the success of the season. It doesn't take away that we finished in third-place and we get to host a (tournament) game on Sunday. It's just a very bitter end to what has been a very good regular season of conference games."
The Colonials went ahead in the 38th minute when Shane McMillan was on the receiving end of an Anass Hadran corner kick, snuck free inside the six-yard box and headed a shot just past
Lucas Morefield. The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime when Even Lamarca got free and rolled a shot just inside the far post after receiving a pass from Owen Jowett. RMU got second half scores from Chase Gilley, Victor Koah and a second tally from McMillan in the 79th minute.
Offensively, IUPUI was held to just three shot attempts, none of which were on frame. Freshman back
Dominic Breidenbach had IUPUI's best look of the day when he hit a drive from the left side just over the bar from 12 yards out.
RMU finished with 10 corner kicks and held IUPUI without a corner kick or a shot on goal. Morefield closed with three saves in the loss.
IUPUI will now host No. 6 seed Detroit Mercy in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m.
