CHICAGO - The IUPUI basketball team will embark on a third straight true road game to open the 2022-23 season on Monday night (Nov. 14) when the Jaguars take on Chicago State (0-2) inside the Jones Convocation Center. Monday's game will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. CT (8:00 Eastern) and will be broadcast on FloSports.
Head coach
Matt Crenshaw's team has opened the season with back-to-back road losses during a two-game trip through Iowa, suffering losses at Iowa State and Drake. Junior
Daylan Hamilton paced the Jags with a career-high 12 points (5-11 FG, 1-2 3's, 1-2 FT) off the IUPUI bench at Drake on Wednesday (Nov. 9) and freshman
Vincent Brady II chimed in with nine points. Crenshaw has used three freshmen in the starting lineup of both games thus far as Brady (5.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg),
Amhad Jarrard (4.5 ppg) and
Armon Jarrard (2.0 rpg) have all started each of the season's first two games. Sophomore guard
Jlynn Counter leads the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and shooting 40 percent from the floor to start the year.
IUPUI has been without the services of projected starting guard
Bryce Monroe to start the year, due to injury. Monroe averaged 6.3 points and 2.2 assists per game at San Diego last season and was the 2021 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 10.1 points and 2.8 assists per game at Sam Houston State.
Monday's game marks the 27th meeting all-time between IUPUI and Chicago State with the two teams having split the first 26 meetings. CSU defeated IUPUI last season inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Dec. 16, 2021 by a 61-55 score. IUPUI is just 4-8 all-time in 12 matchups played in Chicago.
QUOTABLE
"I thought we showed some fight tonight, particularly after such a bad start. This was a good preparation for us, particularly for some of our younger guys. To have to prepare for a tough opponent on the road after just one day's rest is what you have to do when you get to conference play too. This was a good test and showed us where we are and now we have to get back home and get to work," Crenshaw said following the loss at Drake.
TIDBITS
- IUPUI freshmen combined to score 50 points in the exhibition game win over Brescia and newcomers scored 91 of the team's 101 points.
- IUPUI returns just 9.1 points per game from a season ago as Crenshaw's squad returns just two letterwinners in
Boston Stanton III (4.7 ppg) and Carrasco (4.4 ppg). The 9.1 points per game are the fewest returning points in the country among the nation's Division I programs.
