INDIANAPOLIS - Host Butler scored three unanswered second half goals to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 4-1 victory at the Sellick Bowl on Saturday night (Oct. 8). Redshirt freshman
Josemir Gomez netted his sixth goal of the season off the Jaguars' bench in the loss.
Bryson Najarian, making his second start of the season in goal, registered seven saves in defeat.
Najarian and the IUPUI defense weathered an early storm from the Butler attack as the Bulldogs methodically poked and prodded the Jaguars' defense from all angles, earning the game's first five shots and the bulk of possession. The Bulldogs finally broke through in the 29th minute when Butler's Wilmer Cabrera Jr. blistered a free kick from 20 yards out for the day's first goal.
IUPUI was more spry in the attack after yielding a score and ultimately got even in the final minute of the first half when Gomez delivered a header home off a
Fernando Borges corner kick.
An IUPUI turnover near midfield led to the Bulldogs getting free on a counter in the 51st minute as Hooks slotted a shot past Najarian. Just more than three minutes later, Hooks was the recipient of some nifty passing as he slid a shot past Najarian.
Butler (7-3-1) capped the scoring in the 61st minute when Griffin DeBolt drilled a penalty kick past Najarian.
Butler finished with a 22-7 shot margin and held possession for 60 percent of the contest.
The Jaguars will return to Horizon League play on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when they host Northern Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ and IUPUI players and coaches will be wearing purple bracelets in support of Domestic Violence Awareness that evening.
